Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup Semi Final Epsom played against Malden Manor on Thursday 30th August 2018. This game was played at Cuddington (neutral green). Epsom won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost the match 55 - 61. Details: Rink 2 Phil Sims Bob Blaker John Warren Jim Scott lost 12 - 22 Epsom struggled all evening on this rink finding themselves 5 - 15 down after 10 ends. After 18 ends they were still 11 shots behind & lost by 10 shots. Rink 3 Pat Buckley David Bragg Martin Harbottle Peter Miller lost 23 - 24 After 12 ends Epsom was 10 - 16 down, but were ahead 22 - 19 on the 18th end. They were outscored 2 - 6 over the last 3 ends to lose by just 1 shot. Rink 4 Dave Pearce Graham Coleman Terry Berry John Meningen won 19 - 14 Epsom led 9 - 6 after 10 ends, but went behind 9 - 10 on the 13th end. Epsom then scored 5 shots over the next 4 ends to take the lead once more. Malden Manor drew level 14 - 14 on the 19th end, but Epsom scored 3 shots on end 20 & 2 shots on the last end to win by 5 shots. Final Score: Epsom 55 Malden Manor 61.
The Yonwin Cup started in 1976 & Epsom have entered this Competition ever since. The first ever game was against Berrylands BC which Epsom won 66 - 54. Epsom have won the Cup on 7 occasions - 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1995 & 2003. They have lost in 5 Finals - 1982, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2016. Since 1976 Epsom have won 81 games & lost 35. The best wins came in 2015 when Epsom beat Ewell 77 - 36 (41 shots) & Cuddington 74 - 33 in 2018 (41 shots). 54 members of Epsom Bowling Club have played in the Yonwin Cup since 1976. To date significant appearances of current members are:- Graham Pilbrow has played in 75 matches, Les Owen 58, Peter Miller 58, Martin Harbottle 49, Graham Naish 43 & George Sperring 40. Mixed Friendly Epsom played away against Epsom Court on Thursday 30th August 2018. This was Epsom's 7th match this season. They have won 5 lost 2 Epsom won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won the match 47 - 41. Details: Rink 2 Bill Lawrence Ruth Nixon Brian Kenyon won 15 - 14 Epsom led 11 - 9 after 10 ends & 13 - 12 after 15 ends. They won by 1 shot. Rink 3 Mike James Sue Needham Heather Pigden lost 14 - 16 Epsom was 7 - 9 down after 10 ends & 9 - 16 behind on the 15th end. Epsom won the last 3 ends, but lost by 2 shots. Rink 4 Brian Collis Frank Thompson Sylvia Smart won 18 - 11 Epsom led all afternoon on this rink. They led 10 - 4 after 10 ends & 14 - 10 on the 15th end. They won by 7 shots. Ladies' Friendly Epsom played away against Purley on Tuesday 28th August 2018. They won on both rinks & the match 36 - 27. Details: Rink 3 Sandy Cooper Ruth Nixon Anne Hoffmann Sylvia Smart won 18 - 14 Epsom took the lead on the 7th end, 6 - 5 & remained ahead for the rest of the game. They led 16 - 10 after 15 ends & won by 4 shots. Rink 4 Audrey Jones Sandie Harvey Sandra Huxford Heather Pigden won 18 - 13 Epsom raced into a 10 - 0 lead after just 6 ends, but Purley came back into the game to be just 1 shot behind 12 - 11 on the 15th end. Epsom won 5 of the last 6 ends to win by 5 shots. Final Score: Epsom 36 Purley 27 |

East Surrey League - Men Epsom played at home against Croydon on Saturday 25th August 2018. They won on all 4 rinks & the match 94 - 54 (12 - 0). This was an outstanding performance across all 4 rinks with Epsom dominating the play throughout the afternoon. After 12 ends across the the 4 rinks Epsom led 60 - 30 (+30 shots) & ended the match with the best win against Croydon since they joined the League. This was the second 12 - 0 win of the season & also the best shots difference win of the season (+40 shots). This was Epsom's 400th match in the ESL. Details: Rink 2 Stefan Tomm Graham Coleman John Hart Terry Berry won 24 - 13 After 12 ends Epsom led 16 - 7 & 21 - 9 after 18 ends. They won by 11 shots. Rink 3 Howard Ellis Pat Buckley Simon Meller Peter Miller won 23 - 12 Epsom were set up on this rink all afternoon by excellent bowling from the lead. Epsom led 14 - 10 after 15 ends & went on to win by 11 shots. Rink 4 Brian Kenyon Bob Blaker John Warren Jim Scott won 21 - 13 Epsom led 13 - 5 after 12 ends & 18 - 11 after 18 ends. They won by 8 shots. Rink 6 Dave Pearce Phil Sims Andrew Turnbull John Meningen won 26 - 16 Epsom had an 8 shot advantage after 12 ends, 18 - 10. They continued to dominate the rink & won by 10 shots. Final Score: Epsom 94 Croydon 54 Epsom 12 points Croydon 0 points
In November 2014 Croydon joined the ESL League (with Cheam) resulting in 2 divisions being formed. Both Clubs were in Division 2. Both Clubs gained promotion for the 2016 season. Epsom have played Croydon 6 times. They have won 5 & lost 1 The best win came in 2018 when Epsom won at Croydon 99 80 (+19). The best rink win came in the same match, 30 13 (+17). The most shots scored in a match was also in this game 179. The record sequence of wins is 3 (2016 2018). Croydon was founded as a Mens Bowling Club in 1749 and the Ladies section was formed in 1974. |

Ladies' Friendly Epsom played at home against Ashtead on Tuesday 21st August 2018. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 27 - 24. Details: Rink 5 Lesley South Ruth Baker Sylvia Smart won 15 - 11 After 9 ends Epsom led 7 - 5, but the scores were level 11 - 11 on the 15th end. Epsom won the last 3 ends to win by 4 shots. Rink 6 Sandy Cooper Dolly Snow Anne Hoffmann lost 12 - 13 After 9 ends Epsom led 8 - 4, but just like rink 5 Ashtead levelled on 15 ends, 10 - 10. Ashtead took the lead going into the last end leaving Epsom 3 shots behind. Epsom scored 2 shots to lose by just 1 shot. Final Score: Epsom 27 Ashtead 24 |

East Surrey League - Ladies - Summary (2017 figures in brackets) There were 8 (8) games scheduled and 8 (8) played. Of these 2 (2) were won, 5 (6) lost & 1 (0) drawn. 250 (280) shots were scored for and 317 (334) against. The Ladies gained 10 (9) points. Of the 16 (16) rinks played 5 (5) were won, 11 (11) lost. The best win was 45 35 v Shirley Park on 18th August & the best rink win was 31 10 in the same match. 13 (14) Ladies played this year in the League. Anne Hoffmann, Audrey Jones played in all 8 matches. Ruth Baker, Trish Southgate, Sandra Huxford & Heather Pigden in 7. |

East Surrey League - Ladies Epsom played at home against Shirley Park on Saturday 18th August 2018. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 45 - 35 (3 - 1). This was the final match for the Ladies. Details: Rink 4 Sandra Huxford Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Heather Pigden won 31 - 10 Epsom led 15 - 6 after 10 ends & 15 - 10 after 12 ends. Epsom then won all the remaining ends to win by 21 shots. Rink 5 Audrey Jones Dolly Snow Anne Hoffmann Sylvia Smart lost 14 - 25 Epsom led 14 - 10 after 14 ends, but then lost all the remaining ends to lose by 11 shots. East Surrey League - Men Epsom played away against Horley on Saturday 18th August 2018. They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 82 - 73 (10 - 2). After 10 ends across the 4 rinks Epsom had a commanding 29 shot advantage, but Horley came back strongly to narrow the gap to just 8 shots on 18 ends. However, Epsom went on to win by 9 shots. Details: Rink 2 Phil Sims Brian Kenyon Terry Berry Graham Naish won 23 - 16 Epsom stormed ahead to a 17 - 2 lead after 10 ends, but Horley came back well into the game to be 8 shots adrift on end 18 (22 - 14). Epsom won by 7 shots. Rink 3 Stefan Tomm Graham Coleman Simon Meller Peter Miller won 23 - 14 This rink also had a good lead on 10 ends (13 - 4), but just like rink 2 Horley came back to narrow the gap to 4 shots on the 18th end (18 - 14). However, Epsom finished strongly and won by 9 shots. Rink 4 Dave Pearce Pat Buckley Martin Harbottle John Meningen won 25 - 12 Again a similar story to rink 2 & 3 with Epsom leading 15 - 2 after 10 ends. However, on this rink Epsom continued to play well going on to win by 13 shots. Rink 5 Bob Blaker Andrew Turnbull John Warren Jim Scott lost 11 - 31 Not a good afternoon for Epsom on this rink. They were 6 - 14 adrift on 10 ends, 8 - 25 down on the 18th end & lost by 20 shots. Final Score: Epsom 82 Horley 73 Epsom 10 points Horley 2 points Horley joined the East Surrey League in 1998. At the end of the 2014 season Horley were relegated to Division 2, but returned to Division 1 for the 2017 season. Today was the 30th time Epsom have played Horley in the East Surrey League. Epsom have won 19 & lost 10 & drawn 1. This win today was also the 7th game in a row that Epsom have beaten Horley. The best shot difference win against Horley came in 2010 when Epsom won 106 - 50 (+56). The best rink win came in 2017 when the rink won 42 12 (+30). Earlier this season Epsom beat Horley at home 91 63 (12 0). Epsom were unbeaten for 10 matches v Horley 1999 2008. Horley were founded in 1913 as a Mens Bowling Club & the Ladies section was formed in 1968. |

Ladies' East Surrey League Epsom played against Caterham at home on Thursday 16th August 2018. They lost on both rinks & the match 32 - 47 (0 - 4). Details: Rink 3 Lesley South Ruth Baker Heather Pigden Sandra Huxford lost 17 - 23 The scores were level 10 - 10 on the 11th end, but Epsom led 16 - 14 on end 15. They went behind 16 - 18 on the 18th end finally losing by 6 shots. Rink 4 Audrey Jones Dolly Snow Anne Hoffmann Sylvia Smart lost 15 - 24 Epsom was 7 - 11 down after 10 ends & 12 - 15 behind on the 15th end. They lost by 9 shots. Final Score: Epsom 32 Caterham 47 Epsom 0 points Caterham 4 points. |

Men's Friendly Epsom played against Ashtead at home on Tuesday 14th August 2018. They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 88 - 40. This win extends Epsom men's winning streak to 34 matches. This was the 12th win out of 12 this season. Details: Rink 3 David Ganney Graham Coleman John Meningen won 25 - 10 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 8 ends, but Epsom went ahead immediately and kept in front for the rest of the afternoon. They led 22 - 9 after 15 ends & won by 15 shots. Rink 4 Stefan Tomm David Bragg John Warren won 32 - 6 All three Epsom players had an excellent game on this rink dominating the play all afternoon. They led 15 - 2 after 8 ends, 27 - 2 after 12 ends & won by 26 shots. Rink 5 Derek Martin Frank Thompson Bob Blaker lost 11 - 12 Epsom was behind all afternoon right up to the 17th end when they drew level 11 - 11. On the last end Epsom held 4 shots, but the Ashtead skip, with the last bowl, had a fortunate wick in to score the shot. Rink 6 Bill Lawrence Fred Read Peter Miller won 20 - 12 After 8 ends Epsom led 8 - 6 & were further ahead 15 - 7 on the 12th end. They won by 8 shots. Final Score: Epsom 88 Ashtead 40
Epsom remain unbeaten in Friendly matches since 31st August 2016 when they lost against Cheam Fields 50 - 68. This is a sequence of 34 matches unbeaten. The most games ever played in a season came in 1993 when Epsom played 37 matches. They won 18 & lost 19. |

East Surrey League - Men Epsom played at home against Cheam on Saturday 11th August 2018. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 88 - 83 (8 - 4). Details: Rink 3 Bill Lawrence Pat Buckley Simon Meller Martin Harbottle won 23 - 18 After 10 ends Epsom led 10 - 6, but the scores were level 12 - 12 after 13 ends. Epsom went ahead once again 21 - 13 on the 18th end & won by 5 shots. Rink 4 Bob Blaker David Bragg John Warren Jim Scott won 28 - 13 This was a very good performance on this rink with Epsom leading 12 - 2 after 8 ends & 22 - 9 after 14 ends. They finished well going on to win by 15 shots. Rink 5 Brian Kenyon Geoff Purrott John Huxford Graham Naish lost 19 - 33 This was certainly a game of two halves with Epsom leading 16 - 9 after 10 ends. They lost ends 12 to 16 dropping a total of 15 shots to go behind 17 - 24. They lost by 14 shots. Rink 6 Dave Pearce Keith Roberts Andrew Turnbull John Meningen lost 18 - 19 Epsom found themselves 1 - 10 down after 6 ends, but then scored a total of 11 shots over the next 3 ends to take the lead 12 - 10. Cheam joined the East Surrey League in 2014 (with Croydon). They played in Division 2. They were promoted in 2016 to Division 1. Today was the 6th time Epsom have played Cheam in the East Surrey League. Epsom have won 4 & lost 2. The best shot difference win against Cheam came in 2016 when Epsom won 90 71 (+19). Men's Friendly Epsom played against Carshalton on Wednesday 8th August 2018 in a Triples match. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 69 - 55. Epsom remain unbeaten this season this being the 11th win. Details: Rink 1 Bill Lawrence Frank Thompson Bob Blaker lost 14 - 15 Epsom trailed all evening. They were 6 - 11 down after 10 ends and going into the last end they were 4 shots adrift. They picked up 3 shots to lose by just 1 shot. Rink 2 Mick Cooper Howard Ellis Stefan Lukatschat won 22 - 8 Epsom won 12 of the 18 ends on this rink. They led 14 - 2 after 10 ends & went on to win by 14 shots. Rink 3 Brian Kenyon Brian Collis Andrew Turnbull lost 14 - 18 Epsom was in control right up to the 16th end on this rink. They led 10 - 6 after 10 ends & 13 - 9 after 15 ends. Jill Harris Epsom Bowling Club has been informed that former member Jill Harris has passed away. The Club sends condolences to Ray (her partner) & family at this sad time. Jill was a member at Epsom Bowling Club during the late 1990s to 2005. She joined with her partner Ray Hallett. They left the Club to live in Turkey because of the warmer climate. Both Jill & Ray were competent bowlers & represented the Club in many matches. Before joining Epsom Bowling Club Jill & Ray were members at Raynes Park Bowling Club. In 1993 Jill was the Surrey County Womens President. |

Details: H Bill Lawrence Heather Pigden Bob Blaker won 22 - 12 Epsom led all afternoon. They had a good lead, 17 - 7 after 12 ends & won by 10 shots. The best match win was 50 - 24 (+26) against Esher on the 16th July and the only defeat came against Brockham 22 - 35 (-13) on the 9th July. The best rink win was a 32 - 6 victory against Leatherhead on 30th July . The highest total shots scored in a match was on 16th July against Esher when the combined score was 74 shots (50 - 24). The lowest combined total of shots scored was 57, (22 - 35), in the match against Brockham on 9th July. Epsom scored 392 shots for & there were 256 shots scored against in 2018. The total points was 33. When Epsom won the League in 2004 they gained 35 points.
To date since 2001 Ken Lacey has played in 97 matches, Fred Read 90, Bob Lister 69 & Bill Lawrence 59. The number of members who have played in the Chrystie League since 2001 is 58. A little bit of history:- Since the Chrystie League began in 2001 Epsom have played 171 matches. Of these 99 have been won, 67 lost, 5 drawn and 9 cancelled. One match was conceded in 2016. The highest number of shots scored in a season was in 2018 (392) when Epsom were the Champions. The most shots scored against in a year was in 2010 - 327.
Since 2001 Epsom have a very good record in this league, winning in 2004, 2017 & 2018, and 2nd in 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2013.

However, Epsom had the better of the rest of the game & led 24 - 17 after 18 ends & won by 9 shots. The scores were level 12 - 12 after 14 ends, but Epsom went behind again 13 - 16 on the 16th end. However, Epsom won the last 5 ends to win by 6 shots.
