Vilamoura League

Epsom played Wallington on Thursday 29th August 2019 and lost at home, won away and won overall 40 - 37 (4 - 2).

Details:

Home: Audrey Jones Pat Buckley Ted Ray  lost 17 - 22

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 7 ends, but Epsom lost the lead on the next end & lost by 5 shots.

Away: Phil Sims Ruth Baker Keith Roberts  won 23 - 15

Epsom led 14 - 7 after 8 ends & 20 - 13 after 15 ends.  They won  by 8 shots

Final Score:  Epsom 40   Wallington 37   Epsom 4 points  Wallington  2 points

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played at home against Purley on Wednesday 28th August 2019 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & drew overall 31 - 31.  Epsom was 16 - 18 down across the 2 rinks after 12 ends, but came back well to tie the match.

The game started very close woth the scores level 4 - 4 after 8 ends.  However, Epsom went behind 5 - 10 on the 12th end.  On the 17th end Epsom picked up 6 shots, but lost by 8 shots.

Rink 6  Audrey Jones Frances Suttonwood Sylvia Smart Marilyn Walsh-Hoye  won 19 - 11

Epsom led all afternoon.  They were 11 - 8 ahead after 12 ends & won by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 31  Purley 31

 

Presidents v Secretaries (corrected 26/08)

This annual match took place on Sunday 25th August 2019.  The Secretaries team won 41 - 34. Because of the very hot weather it was decided to play 14 ends,

The Secretaries led 6 - 4 after 7 ends, but lost by just 1 shot.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played away against Croydon on Saturday 24th August 2019 and won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 89 - 60 (10 - 2).  Epsom led across the 4 rinks all afternoon.  They led 61 - 44 (+17) after 15 ends & 80 - 52 (+28) after 18 ends and went on to win by 29 shots.

Epsom led 12 - 7 after 10 ends & went further ahead 26 - 9 after 18 ends.  They won by 18 shots.

Rink 3  Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen  won 23 - 18

Epsom led 11 - 9 after 9 ends and won the next 5 ends to go ahead 19 - 9.  Croydon came back well over the remaining ends, but Epsom won by 5 shots.

Rink 4  Keith Roberts Pat Buckley Terry Hoye Les Owen  lost 14 - 20

Epsom started poorly finding themselves 3 - 10 down after 10 ends.  They came back well to go ahead 13 - 12 on the 16th end.  However, they were out scored 1 - 8 over the remaining ends to lose by 6 shots.

Rink 5  Dave Pearce Bob Blaker John Warren Terry Berry  won 24 - 12

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 11 ends, but Epsom won 4 of the next 5 ends to go 19 - 10 ahead.  They won by 12 shots.

Did you know

Epsom have played Croydon 8 times in the ESL, won 7, lost 1 & won the last 6 matches in a row.

The best win came in 2018 (94 - 54).  Croydon were founded in 1749.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom played away against Godstone on Saturday 24th August 2019 and lost on both rinks & the match 26 - 29 (0 - 4). The Ladies decided to play just 15 ends because of the warm weather.

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 11 ends & Epsom led 12 - 10 going into the last end, and with Epsom holding 2 shots the Godstone skip drew the jack back for a count of 3 leaving Epsom losing by just 1 shot.

The scores were level 11 - 11 after 10 ends, but Epsom were outscored 3 - 5 over the remaining ends to lose by 2 shots.

Epsom Ladies have played Godstone 22 times, won 14, lost 7 & drawn 1  They first played Godstone in 1998.

Past Times 'A'

Epsom 'A' played against Purley Bury 'B' on Friday 23rd August 2019 and lost on both rinks & the matcj 32 - 41.

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom led 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  They lost the last 3 ends to lose by 5 shots.

Away Terry Hoye Geoff Purrott : Simon Meller Peter Miller lost 18 - 22

The scores were also level, 7 - 7 after 10 ends on this rink, but Epsom went behind 10 - 18 on the 16th end.  They lost by 4 shots.

Did you know

The Past Times Competition replaced the Times Herald Competition in 2001 (Graham Pilbrow played in this final).

Epsom won the Times Herald Competition in 1975 & reached the final of the Past Times in 2010 (John Hart, Les Owen, Terry Hoye, Brian Kenyon, Martin Harbottle & Jim Scott played in this final).  Epsom lost to Sutton 28 - 45.

 

Past Times 'B'

Epsom 'B' played against Cheam on Friday 23rd August 2019 and lost on both rinks & the match 26 - 38.

Epsom was 8 - 11 down after 10 ends, but were level, 13 - 13 on the 15th end.  They lost by 6 shots.

Away: Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen  lost 12 - 18

Epsom was 5 - 9 down on the 11th end, butwent ahead 2 ends later, 10 - 9. However, they lost the next 4 ends to lose the lead & lost by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 26  Cheam 38

Wayne played in his very first Outside Competition for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Vilamoura League

Epsom played against Cheam on Wednesday 22nd August 2019 and lost on both rinks & lost overall 21 - 53 (0 - 6).

Details:

Home: Richard Senior Heather Pigden Keith Roberts  lost 11 - 23

The scores were level 11 - 11 after 12 ends, but Epsom failed to score again & lost by 12 shots.

Away: Audrey Jones Phil Sims Ted Ray  lost 10 - 29

Not a good afternoon for Epsom at Cheam when they lost by 19 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 21  Cheam 53    Epsom 0 points  Cheam 6 points

 

Ladies' Friendly

The Ladies travelled to Ashtead to play a Triples match on Tuesday 20th August 2019 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & drew the match 32 - 32.

Details:

Rink 2  Sue Needham Ruth Nixon Marilyn Walsh-Hoye  lost 13 - 19

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom went behind 11 - 18 on the 15th end.  They lost by 6 shots.

Rink 4  Frances Suttonwood Ruth Baker Heather Pigden  won 19 - 13

Epsom led 4 - 2 after 3 ends & won the next 7 ends to go further ahead 16 - 5.  They won by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 32  Ashtead 32

 

Windeler Cup

The Annual Windeler Cup was played on Monday 19th August 2019. 24 members turned up to play. Players were divided into Group A & Group B and played 4 games of 4 ends.  The Final was played over 5 ends.

Details:

Robert York Trish Southgate John Meningen v Rose Price Sue Skinner John Warren

John Warren's team led 4 - 2 going into the last end, but was 5 shots down with one bowl to play.  He managed to get second wood thus winning by 1 shot.

Final Score:  John Meningen's team 3  John Warren's team 4.

Did you know

John Warren won the Windeler Cup in 2014 & was runner up in 2016 & 2018

This was the first trophy at Epsom Bowling Club for Sue & Rose.

Ladies' East Surrey League

Epsom Ladies played away against Shirley Park on Sunday 18th August 2019 and won on both rinks, & won overall 39 - 31 (4 - 0). Epsom led all afternoon across the 2 rinks.  They were 30 - 22 ahead after 15 ends & won by 8 shots.

Details:

Rink 1  Rose Price Sylvia Smart Ruth Baker Marilyn Walsh-Hoye  won 20 - 17

Epsom trailed 8 - 11 after 10 ends, but won the next 3 ends to go ahead 16 - 12. They stayed in front for the rest of the game & won by 3 shots.

Rink 2  Janet Newman Eileen Mills Trish Southgate Anne Hoffmann  won 19 - 14

Epsom had a good lead, 11 - 4 after 10 ends & 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  They won by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 39  Shirley Park 31  Epsom 4 points  Shirley Park 0 points

Rose Price played her first match in the ESL.  Eileen Mills played in her 100th match in this League.

Did you know

Epsom Ladies have now won 5 matches in a row in the ESL.  The last time this happened was in 2014 (won 6 in a row).

Epsom have played Shirley Park 11 times in this League, won 6, lost 4 & drawn 1.

Shirley Park Ladies were founded in 1992.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played at home against Cheam Fields on Saturday 17th August 2019 and won on all 4 rinks & the match 91 - 58 (12 - 0). After 15 ends Epsom led 72 - 35 across the 4 rinks & won by 33 shots.

Details:

Rink 3  Derek Martin Ted Ray Simon Meller Peter Miller  won 27 - 12

Epsom started strongly & went into a 15 - 2 lead after 10 ends.  They still had a good lead, 23 - 4 after 15 ends & won by 15 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen  won 22 - 13

Epsom led 7 - 5 after 10 ends & extended the lead 17 - 8 after 15 ends.  They won by 9 shots.

Rink 5  Dave Pearce Bob Blaker John Warren Terry Berry  won 21 - 16

Epsom dominated this game up to the 15th end when they led 20 - 8.  However, they lost the next 5 ends to lead by just 4 shots (20 - 16).  They won by 5 shots.

Rink 6  Stefan Tomm Terry Hoye Les Owen Jim Scott  won 21 - 17

This was a very close game all afternoon with the scores level 9 - 9 after 10 ends.  Epsom went behind, 12 - 17 on the 16th end, but won the next 5 ends to win by 4 shots.  Going into the last end the scores were level 17 - 17 and Epsom faced 1 down with the 3's & skips to play. Les played an excellent bowl to get the shot & the Cheam Field skip with his last bowl played a running bowl, but took his own bowl out to leave Epsom lying 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 91  Cheam Fields 58  Epsom 12 points  Cheam Fields 0 points.

Did you know

Epsom have played Cheam Fields 31 times in the ESL, won 20, lost 10 & drawn 1.  In the last 10 meetings Epsom have won 8 & lost 2.

The best win against Cheam Fields came in 2010 when Epsom won 127 - 52 & the best rink win came in the same match 39 - 7.

Cheam Fields were founded in 1914.

Epsom Ladies played away against Caterham on Thursday 15th August 2019 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 38 - 27 (3 - 1).

Epsom led 12 - 6 after 10 ends & 17 - 7 after 15 ends.  They won by13 shots.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones Sylvia Smart Eileen Mills Marilyn Walsh-Hoye  lost 15 - 17

Epsom led 15 - 9 after 16 ends, but lost the last 5 ends to lose by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 38  Caterham 27   Epsom 3 points  Caterham 1 point

Did you know

This is the first time in 8 years that Epsom have beaten Caterham. Epsom have now played Caterham 16 times, won 5 & lost 11.  Epsom Ladies have now won 4 matches in a row in the ESL.

Caterham Ladies were founded in 1965.

 

Chrystie League 2019

Last years figures in brackets.

This year Epsom won 5 (9), lost 4 (1) & drew 0 (0). Epsom ended up gaining 19½ (33) points and came 3rd (1st) in the League.

In all 15 (18) members represented Epsom in the Chrystie League in 2019.  The following are some significant appearances:-

Keith Roberts & Richard Price 9, Frank Thompson 8 & Fred Read 7.

Here are some facts that you may find interesting from 2019:- (2018 data in brackets)

Number of rinks won - 7 (15) Number of rinks lost - 10 (5) Number of rinks drawn - 0 (0).  Epsom won 2 (6) of the games 4 - 0 and lost 3 (1) games 4 - 0. 

The best match win was 43 - 15 (+28) against Bookham on the 17th June .

The best rink win was a 28 - 5 victory against Leatherhead on 29th July.

The highest total shots scored in a match was 73 shots on 8th July v Brockham (38 – 35) & on 22nd July v Bookham (39 – 34).

The lowest combined total of shots scored was 57, (23 - 34), in the match against Leatherhead on 24th June when Epsom lost.

Epsom scored 300 (392) shots for & there were 279 (256) shots scored against in 2019.  The total points was 19½ (33). When Epsom won the League in 2004 they gained 35 points.

To date since 2001 Fred Read has played in 97 matches.

The number of members who have played in the Chrystie League since 2001 is 63. 

A little bit of history:-

Since the Chrystie League began in 2001 Epsom have played 180 matches.  Of these 105 have been won, 70 lost, 5 drawn and 10 cancelled. 

The highest number of shots scored in a season was in 2018 (392) when Epsom were the Champions.  The most shots scored against in a year was in 2010 - 327.

Since 2001 Epsom have a very good record in this league, winning in 2004, 2017 & 2018, and 2nd in 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2013.

 

Graham Coleman receiving his Surrey County Badge on Tuesday 13th August 2019 from the Surrey President Peter Marshall.  Graham played at Southey Bowling Club against Middlesex.  Surrey won 122 - 104.

Martin Harbottle, Peter Miller & Les Owen also played in this match.

Epsom played away against Ashtead in a Triples Match on Tuesday 13th August 2019 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 41 - 42.

Epsom led 10 - 3 after 10 ends & won by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Richard Price Hayden Thornton Bob Blaker  lost 7 - 20

Epsom only scored on 6 ends & lost by 13 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Martin Phil Sims Pat Buckley  won 16 - 9

Epsom led 10 - 5 after 10 ends  15 - 7 after 15 ends.  They won by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 41  Ashtead 42

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played their last Chrystie League match this season at home against Brockham on Monday 12th August 2019 and drew on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 29 - 37 (½ - 3½ ).

Details:

Epsom led 9 - 8 after 10 ends, but had a poor last 8 ends and lost by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Richard Price Brian Collis Wayne Thornton Fred Read  drew 16 - 16

Epsom was 8 - 6 ahead after 9 ends, but went behind right up to the last end when they scored 4 shots to tie the rink.

Epsom played against Carshalton Beeches on Monday 12th August 2019 and Epsom played against Carshalton Beeches on Monday 12th August 2019 and lost on both rinks & 20 - 31 (0 - 6). This match was shortened because of thunder storms.

Epsom played away against Ashtead on Saturday 10th August 2019 and won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 92 - 63 (10 - 2).  This was a game of two halves with Epsom trailing 29 - 40 after 10 ends across the 4 rinks.  After 15 ends Epsom led 57 - 47 & went on to win by 29 shots.

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 11 ends, but Epsom won 7 of the remaining ends to win by 9 shots.

Epsom trailed 6 - 13 after 10 ends & 12 - 19 after 17 ends.  They won the last 4 ends picking up 13 shots to win by 6 shots.

Like the whole game this was a case of two halves.  Epsom were 2 - 15 down after 11 ends & came within 2 shots, 14 - 16 on the 15th end. Going into the last end Epsom needed 3 shots to win , but dropped a single shot to lose by 3 shots.

Epsom led 10 - 7 after 8 ends, but went behind 13 - 15 on the 15th end.  They won the last 3 ends to win by 3 shots.

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 9 ends & still level 12 - 12 on the 13th end.  Epsom finished strongly & won by 7 shots.

Epsom led 9 - 2 after 8 ends, but lost the next 6 ends to go 9 - 13 down.  Going into the last end Epsom led 15 - 13, but dropped 2 shots.

Epsom limited Carshalton to winning just 6 ends.  Epsom led 18 - 3 after 10 ends & won by 14 shots.

Epsom was 3 - 10 down after 10 ends and were 3 shots adrift on the 16th end.  They lost by 5 shots.

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 12 ends.  Epsom then went ahead 14 - 9 on the 13th end, but lost the next 3 ends to go behind by 2 shots. They lost by 6 shots.

This was a good performance by Epsom on this rink.  They led 13 - 8 after 10 ends & 20 - 13 after 15 ends.  They won by 12 shots.

Epsom was 8 - 11 down after 10 ends and further behind 10 - 18 on the 15th end.  They lost by 8 shots.

Epsom played away against Wallington on Saturday 3rd August 2019 and won on both rinks & the match 40 - 34 (4 - 0). After 10 ends across the 2 rinks Epsom was 27 - 10 ahead & 34 - 29 after 18 ends.  They won by 6 shots.

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink.  They were 15 - 6 ahead after 10 ends & 17 - 9 ahead after 15 ends.  Wallington won the next 4 ends but Epsom won by 3 shots.

Rink 2  Sandie Harvey Trish Southgate Anne Hoffmann Heather Pigden  won 21 - 18

Epsom led 12 - 4 after 10 ends, but lost the lead on the 16th end, 14 - 16.  Epsom won 4 of the remaining ends to win by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 40  Wallington 34   Epsom 4 points  Wallington 0 points

Epsom played against Croydon on Friday 2nd August 2019 and won at home & away & the match 43 - 33 (6 - 0). Croydon joined the League this season.

After 9 ends Epsom was 9 - 12 down, but picked up 5 shots on the next end to go ahead.  The scores were level 17 - 17 on the 13th end, but Epsom won the last 3 ends picking up 3 singles to win by 2 shots.

Away: Lesley South Brian Kenyon Ted Ray  won 22 - 14

Epsom started strongly by going into a 11 - 0 lead after 6 ends.  They still led 17 - 12 on the 12th end & won by 8 shots.

Past Times Epsom 'A'

Epsom played against Purley on Thursday 1st August 2019 and won at home & lost away, but won overall 46 - 45. Epsom was 40 - 27 ahead across both rinks after 15 ends, but Purley came back strongly both at home & away.  The result was decided on the last ends home & away.

Epsom was 12 - 8 ahead after 10 ends & 18 - 13 ahead after 18 ends.  Epsom picked up 2 singles on the last 2 ends which proved vital to the result.

Epsom was well in control when they led 22 - 9 after 13 ends.  However they lost the last 8 ends to lose by 5 shots. The last end was replayed after Peter made a no end as he was 4 shots down.  Epsom dropped 1 shot on the replayed end.

Epsom led 9 - 8 on the 13th end & won all the remaining ends to win by 8 shots.
