Vilamoura League Epsom played Wallington on Thursday 29th August 2019 and lost at home, won away and won overall 40 - 37 (4 - 2). Details: Home: Audrey Jones Pat Buckley Ted Ray lost 17 - 22 The scores were level 6 - 6 after 7 ends, but Epsom lost the lead on the next end & lost by 5 shots. Ladies' Friendly Epsom Ladies played at home against Purley on Wednesday 28th August 2019 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & drew overall 31 - 31. Epsom was 16 - 18 down across the 2 rinks after 12 ends, but came back well to tie the match. Details: Rink 5 Sue Needham Lesley South Anne Hoffmann Heather Pigden lost 12 - 20 The game started very close woth the scores level 4 - 4 after 8 ends. However, Epsom went behind 5 - 10 on the 12th end. On the 17th end Epsom picked up 6 shots, but lost by 8 shots. Rink 6 Audrey Jones Frances Suttonwood Sylvia Smart Marilyn Walsh-Hoye won 19 - 11 Epsom led all afternoon. They were 11 - 8 ahead after 12 ends & won by 8 shots. Final Score: Epsom 31 Purley 31 |

Presidents v Secretaries (corrected 26/08) This annual match took place on Sunday 25th August 2019. The Secretaries team won 41 - 34. Because of the very hot weather it was decided to play 14 ends, Details: Presidents team first Rink 2 Richard Price Anne Hoffmann Marilyn Walsh-Hoye v Rose Price Trish Southgate David Ganney 8 - 14 The Presidents were 3 - 8 down after 7 ends & lost by 6 shots. East Surrey League - Men Epsom played away against Croydon on Saturday 24th August 2019 and won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 89 - 60 (10 - 2). Epsom led across the 4 rinks all afternoon. They led 61 - 44 (+17) after 15 ends & 80 - 52 (+28) after 18 ends and went on to win by 29 shots. Details: Rink 2 Derek Martin Ted Ray Simon Meller Peter Miller won 28 - 10 Epsom led 12 - 7 after 10 ends & went further ahead 26 - 9 after 18 ends. They won by 18 shots. Rink 3 Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen won 23 - 18 Epsom led 11 - 9 after 9 ends and won the next 5 ends to go ahead 19 - 9. Croydon came back well over the remaining ends, but Epsom won by 5 shots. Rink 4 Keith Roberts Pat Buckley Terry Hoye Les Owen lost 14 - 20 Epsom started poorly finding themselves 3 - 10 down after 10 ends. They came back well to go ahead 13 - 12 on the 16th end. However, they were out scored 1 - 8 over the remaining ends to lose by 6 shots. Rink 5 Dave Pearce Bob Blaker John Warren Terry Berry won 24 - 12 The scores were level 9 - 9 after 11 ends, but Epsom won 4 of the next 5 ends to go 19 - 10 ahead. They won by 12 shots. Did you know Epsom have played Croydon 8 times in the ESL, won 7, lost 1 & won the last 6 matches in a row. The best win came in 2018 (94 - 54). Croydon were founded in 1749. |

East Surrey League - Ladies Epsom played away against Godstone on Saturday 24th August 2019 and lost on both rinks & the match 26 - 29 (0 - 4). The Ladies decided to play just 15 ends because of the warm weather. Details: Rink 2 Lesley South Eileen Mills Anne Hoffmann Heather Pigden lost 12 - 13 The scores were level 9 - 9 after 11 ends & Epsom led 12 - 10 going into the last end, and with Epsom holding 2 shots the Godstone skip drew the jack back for a count of 3 leaving Epsom losing by just 1 shot. Rink 4 Audrey Jones Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Marilyn Walsh-Hoye lost 14 - 16 The scores were level 11 - 11 after 10 ends, but Epsom were outscored 3 - 5 over the remaining ends to lose by 2 shots. Past Times 'A' Epsom 'A' played against Purley Bury 'B' on Friday 23rd August 2019 and lost on both rinks & the matcj 32 - 41. Details: Home: Dave Pearce Les Owen Jim Scott Terry Berry lost 14 - 19 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom led 13 - 10 after 15 ends. They lost the last 3 ends to lose by 5 shots. Away Terry Hoye Geoff Purrott : Simon Meller Peter Miller lost 18 - 22 The scores were also level, 7 - 7 after 10 ends on this rink, but Epsom went behind 10 - 18 on the 16th end. They lost by 4 shots. Final Score: Epsom 32 Purley Bury 'B' 41 Did you know The Past Times Competition replaced the Times Herald Competition in 2001 (Graham Pilbrow played in this final). Epsom won the Times Herald Competition in 1975 & reached the final of the Past Times in 2010 (John Hart, Les Owen, Terry Hoye, Brian Kenyon, Martin Harbottle & Jim Scott played in this final). Epsom lost to Sutton 28 - 45. |

Past Times 'B' Epsom 'B' played against Cheam on Friday 23rd August 2019 and lost on both rinks & the match 26 - 38. Details: Home: Derek Martin Wayne Thornton Bob Blaker John Warren lost 14 - 20 Epsom was 8 - 11 down after 10 ends, but were level, 13 - 13 on the 15th end. They lost by 6 shots. Away: Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen lost 12 - 18 Epsom was 5 - 9 down on the 11th end, butwent ahead 2 ends later, 10 - 9. However, they lost the next 4 ends to lose the lead & lost by 6 shots. Final Score: Epsom 26 Cheam 38 Wayne played in his very first Outside Competition for Epsom Bowling Club. |

Ladies' Friendly The Ladies travelled to Ashtead to play a Triples match on Tuesday 20th August 2019 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & drew the match 32 - 32. Details: Rink 2 Sue Needham Ruth Nixon Marilyn Walsh-Hoye lost 13 - 19 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom went behind 11 - 18 on the 15th end. They lost by 6 shots. Rink 4 Frances Suttonwood Ruth Baker Heather Pigden won 19 - 13 Epsom led 4 - 2 after 3 ends & won the next 7 ends to go further ahead 16 - 5. They won by 6 shots. Final Score: Epsom 32 Ashtead 32 |

Windeler Cup The Annual Windeler Cup was played on Monday 19th August 2019. 24 members turned up to play. Players were divided into Group A & Group B and played 4 games of 4 ends. The Final was played over 5 ends. Details: Robert York Trish Southgate John Meningen v Rose Price Sue Skinner John Warren John Warren's team led 4 - 2 going into the last end, but was 5 shots down with one bowl to play. He managed to get second wood thus winning by 1 shot. Final Score: John Meningen's team 3 John Warren's team 4. Did you know John Warren won the Windeler Cup in 2014 & was runner up in 2016 & 2018 This was the first trophy at Epsom Bowling Club for Sue & Rose. |

Ladies' East Surrey League Epsom Ladies played away against Shirley Park on Sunday 18th August 2019 and won on both rinks, & won overall 39 - 31 (4 - 0). Epsom led all afternoon across the 2 rinks. They were 30 - 22 ahead after 15 ends & won by 8 shots. Details: Rink 1 Rose Price Sylvia Smart Ruth Baker Marilyn Walsh-Hoye won 20 - 17 Epsom trailed 8 - 11 after 10 ends, but won the next 3 ends to go ahead 16 - 12. They stayed in front for the rest of the game & won by 3 shots. Rink 2 Janet Newman Eileen Mills Trish Southgate Anne Hoffmann won 19 - 14 Epsom had a good lead, 11 - 4 after 10 ends & 13 - 10 after 15 ends. They won by 5 shots. Final Score: Epsom 39 Shirley Park 31 Epsom 4 points Shirley Park 0 points Rose Price played her first match in the ESL. Eileen Mills played in her 100th match in this League. Did you know Epsom Ladies have now won 5 matches in a row in the ESL. The last time this happened was in 2014 (won 6 in a row). Epsom have played Shirley Park 11 times in this League, won 6, lost 4 & drawn 1. Shirley Park Ladies were founded in 1992. |

East Surrey League - Men Epsom played at home against Cheam Fields on Saturday 17th August 2019 and won on all 4 rinks & the match 91 - 58 (12 - 0). After 15 ends Epsom led 72 - 35 across the 4 rinks & won by 33 shots. Details: Rink 3 Derek Martin Ted Ray Simon Meller Peter Miller won 27 - 12 Epsom started strongly & went into a 15 - 2 lead after 10 ends. They still had a good lead, 23 - 4 after 15 ends & won by 15 shots. Rink 4 Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen won 22 - 13 Epsom led 7 - 5 after 10 ends & extended the lead 17 - 8 after 15 ends. They won by 9 shots. Rink 5 Dave Pearce Bob Blaker John Warren Terry Berry won 21 - 16 Epsom dominated this game up to the 15th end when they led 20 - 8. However, they lost the next 5 ends to lead by just 4 shots (20 - 16). They won by 5 shots. Rink 6 Stefan Tomm Terry Hoye Les Owen Jim Scott won 21 - 17 This was a very close game all afternoon with the scores level 9 - 9 after 10 ends. Epsom went behind, 12 - 17 on the 16th end, but won the next 5 ends to win by 4 shots. Going into the last end the scores were level 17 - 17 and Epsom faced 1 down with the 3's & skips to play. Les played an excellent bowl to get the shot & the Cheam Field skip with his last bowl played a running bowl, but took his own bowl out to leave Epsom lying 4 shots. Final Score: Epsom 91 Cheam Fields 58 Epsom 12 points Cheam Fields 0 points. Did you know Epsom have played Cheam Fields 31 times in the ESL, won 20, lost 10 & drawn 1. In the last 10 meetings Epsom have won 8 & lost 2. The best win against Cheam Fields came in 2010 when Epsom won 127 - 52 & the best rink win came in the same match 39 - 7. Chrystie League 2019 Last years figures in brackets. This year Epsom won 5 (9), lost 4 (1) & drew 0 (0). Epsom ended up gaining 19½ (33) points and came 3rd (1st) in the League. In all 15 (18) members represented Epsom in the Chrystie League in 2019. The following are some significant appearances:- Keith Roberts & Richard Price 9, Frank Thompson 8 & Fred Read 7. Here are some facts that you may find interesting from 2019:- (2018 data in brackets) Number of rinks won - 7 (15) Number of rinks lost - 10 (5) Number of rinks drawn - 0 (0). Epsom won 2 (6) of the games 4 - 0 and lost 3 (1) games 4 - 0. The best match win was 43 - 15 (+28) against Bookham on the 17th June . The best rink win was a 28 - 5 victory against Leatherhead on 29th July. The highest total shots scored in a match was 73 shots on 8th July v Brockham (38 – 35) & on 22nd July v Bookham (39 – 34). The lowest combined total of shots scored was 57, (23 - 34), in the match against Leatherhead on 24th June when Epsom lost. Epsom scored 300 (392) shots for & there were 279 (256) shots scored against in 2019. The total points was 19½ (33). When Epsom won the League in 2004 they gained 35 points. To date since 2001 Fred Read has played in 97 matches. The number of members who have played in the Chrystie League since 2001 is 63. A little bit of history:- Since the Chrystie League began in 2001 Epsom have played 180 matches. Of these 105 have been won, 70 lost, 5 drawn and 10 cancelled. The highest number of shots scored in a season was in 2018 (392) when Epsom were the Champions. The most shots scored against in a year was in 2010 - 327. Since 2001 Epsom have a very good record in this league, winning in 2004, 2017 & 2018, and 2nd in 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2013. |
