I
am honoured to contribute to this report commemorating the
events of the Club's Centenary Year. Also to take the
opportunity to express my thanks to Club officers, members and
the Centenary Committee set up to plan all aspects of the year.
Special thanks to Roy Ward for his guidance and advice regarding
etiquette and procedures at prestigious matches, enabling us to
set and follow a format upholding the good name of the Club.
Thank you Senior Vice President Maureen Trumble, Captains Anne
Hoffmann and Les Owen, for match day support and Doreen for your
everyday assistance and encouragement.
Catering at presitigious matches was very well managed by Nancy
Smillie and her team of lady helpers, Eileen Mills standing in
for the early games when Nancy was unwell. For the game versus
the Medway Bowling Association, in which I had a special
interest, they brought 17 visitors, in addition to the 24
bowlers, but Nancy took it all in her stride, providing meals
for everyone.
Manager, John Hart, kept the bar well stocked and the stewards
dispensed our liquid refreshments all season, their efforts much
appreciated.
The green has looked and bowled very well all season, the envy
of many visiting teams and thanks to the efforts of Bob Brennan,
George Sperring and Peter Miller. It was good to see so many men
members helping with the autumn work. The hanging baskets
planted and tended by Jan Allum were a blaze of colour
throughout the season and much admired.
The maintenance crew have also worked very hard, tackling all
types of work around the property and saving the Club great
expense, also installing a new dual fuel double oven and a
dishwasher in the kitchen, items bought with donations left to
the Club in memory of Geoff, Harold and Vic.
In Club competitions, this year Graham Pilbrow became Men's
singles champion for the twentieth time and Jo Ellis the Ladies'
champion. It was also great to see the newer bowlers both men
and ladies involved in finals weekend matches, adding new names
to the Club trophies.
Gill Sperring took part in six finals over the weekend,
culminating in the final of the new 100-1 competition, losing to
Peter Miller after an exciting game. This competition for a
trophy presented by Joan Reynolds in memory of Geoff proved very
popular.
Our thanks must go to Secretaries, Betty Day and Clive Allum for
organising the competitions throughout the season. Clive is
standing down after thirteen years of outstanding service.
The 'September Sunday Morning Invitation Fours' was organized by
Graham Pilbrow for the tenth year, assisted now by Bill Ellis
and sponsored by the National Counties Building Society, to whom
we send thanks for their support and generosity.
Club Nights and Miller’s Triples go from strength to strength,
both very popular and well supported, with Cyril Newman and his
dodgy prizes and 10 teams taking part in Peter’s competition,
again both events finishing up with a get together and meal in
the clubhouse.
In outside competitions Graham Pilbrow won the Sutton & District
B.A. Paston Cup for a record sixth time.
In the Ladies' Surrey triples Maggie O'Sullivan, Eileen Mills
and Gill Sperring reached the semi-final stage.
Brian Kenyon, John Hart and Graham Pilbrow were beaten finalists
in the County Area 3, Top 4 competition. Epsom men reached the
semi-finals of the East Surrey League Top 10 and the Past Times
competitions.
Gala Day and the Awards Dinner were organised by Betty Day,
Eileen Godfrey and the Social Committee. Both events were
enjoyed by all members who attended. Bill Ellis controlled
proceedings on Gala Day, with Ruth and Colin Hunt and Peggy
Shuttleworth judging the Edwardian Dress competition. Clive
Banderet acted as M.C. at the Awards Dinner. My thanks to all
concerned.
Whist Drives and Ken Lacey and Peter Humphreys the short mat
bowling.
Diana Taylor, Jan Allum and Clive Banderet continue to run the
Bridge section.
Social member, Jack Gee, celebrated his 100th birthday on 28th
September. Although a member for only the past two years after
moving into a flat opposite, he has found friendship and company
here at the Club. He enjoys watching play from the gazebo during
the season and attends all social events. A celebratory finger
buffet organized by his family, assisted by Nancy and June
Grant, was held in the Clubhouse for 60 people, both family and
Club members. An event much appreciated by Jack.
Needless to say we are a Club very proud of our past and present
and I feel very privileged to have been President at this time.
Unhappily, prior to the 2008 season, four long serving and much
respected members Geoff Reynolds, Harold Yates, Vic Shrosbree
and Peter Burn died, a very sad time for the families and all
Club members who knew them. We also send our condolences to Ted
Emmett’s family in their recent loss.
I have served you to the best of my ability and I prepare to
hand over the Presidency to Maureen Trumble, in the knowledge
that she, with the help of Club Secretary, John Warren and Club
Treasurer, Arthur Upward, will uphold the Club's good name.
I hope that Centenary Year will be remembered for all the good
things that happened. |
The Centenary Year went very well. All the
Special games took place as scheduled and on each of the
occasions the Club was blessed with fine weather.
As part of the Celebrations every member of Epsom Bowling Club
received a Centenary Brochure, Centenary Lapel Badge and
Centenary Bowls stickers.
At the beginning of each Special match team photographs were
taken and all participating players were asked to sign a
Commemorative Book. Special games were arranged against; The
Surrey Presidents team, Sutton & District Bowling Association,
Bowls England, The Zippers Association, The Surrey Patrons, The
Surrey Ladies Presidents Team, The East Surrey League, The
London & Southern Counties Bowling Association, The London
Secretaries Bowling Association and Medway Bowling Association.
After each game the President, Tony Jackman, addressed all
present and this was followed by a reply from the opposing
President or Captain of the day. The Captain for Epsom (Anne
Hoffmann for the Ladies or Les Owen for the Men) gave out the
scores and asked for the Centenary Booklets to be distributed to
visiting players.
At the Bowls England game metal lapel badges were exchanged on
the green before the match commenced.
Banners were presented to Epsom Bowling Club by some of the
visiting teams. The East Surrey League Captain, Derek Harvey,
presented an inscribed clock to Commemorate their visit. At the
Zippers match a total of £450 was raised for good causes and
£155 was raised at the Patrons match.
For the other fixtures during the season a Centenary Banner was
presented to Clubs on the first occasion a game took place
against that individual Club and Centenary Booklets were
presented to players at the end of each match.
During the season many other matches and events took place.
These included the Annual matches - President v Captain,
Secretaries v President and the Cropley Cup (Men v Ladies).
These were all very well supported by members. |
