Ladies Two Wood Day The Ladies Two Wood Day took place on Saturday 23rd June 2012. The draw for the day was made at 9.30am for the 12 Ladies that attended. A total of 14 games took place to decide the finalists in the Two Wood Championship & the Two Wood Plate. There were some excellent games with three of these going into an extra end. In the morning Sue Needham beat Maureen Trumble on the extra end 14 - 13. In the afternoon two games in particular were very close. In the Semi Final of the Championship Eileen Mills came back from being well behind against Gill Sperring to win on an extra end 16 - 15. The other close game was in the Plate Semi Final when our new member Mary Bragg edged out Ruth Nixon also on an extra end 12 - 11. The Final of the Two Wood Championship will be between Eileen Mills & Lyz Warren. The Two Wood Plate Final will be between Mary Bragg & Maggie O'Sullivan. These two finals will be played on Finals Weekend in September. The whole day was organised by the Ladies' Competition Secretary, Anne Hoffmann assisted by Derek Hoffmann. The tea & coffee was organised by Betty Day & Eileen Godfrey. The Ladies would like to thank the following men for giving up their time to mark the games:- David Bragg, Brian Kenyon, Ron Mew, Roy Doughty, Les Owen & Terry Hoye. Men's Friendly
v Redhill Details: Rink 2 Tony Brydges Bill Lawrence David Bragg won 14 - 12 This rink held the lead all afternoon. They led 6 - 4 after 10 ends, 11 - 10 after 15 ends and finally won a close contest by 2 shots. Rink 3 Eddie Needham Len Philpott Derek Martin won 22 - 8 This rink was always in control of this game and held a 12 - 2 lead at 10 ends. They extended the lead at 15 ends, 18 - 6 and eventually won by 14 shots. Rink 4 Derek Jones Tony Dunn Roy Doughty won 34 - 9 This Epsom rink played very well all afternoon outplaying Redhill. They were 20 - 5 ahead at 10 ends, 29 - 8 up at 15 ends and finally won convincingly by 25 shots. Rink 5 Tony Jackman Bob Blaker Vic Phillips lost 13 - 14 This rink were ahead throughout the game and held a 1 shot advantage going into the last end. District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup Details: Rink 3 Stefan Tomm Geoff Purrott Ron Mew Jim Scott won 23 - 17 Epsom led 12 - 9 after 10 ends and kept the lead throughout the game. At 15 ends they were 20 - 12 ahead and finally won by 6 shots. Rink 4 David Sowdon Ron Snow Pat Buckley Graham Naish won 31 - 15 Epsom dominated this game throughout the morning. They led 15 - 6 after 10 ends & 25 - 6 after 15 ends. They went on to win by 16 shots. Rink 5 Bill Lawrence Martin Harbottle Peter Miller Les Owen won 19 - 18 Epsom had a very poor morning on this rink. They were 10 - 10 after 10 ends, but Auriol went ahead 15 - 11 after 15 ends. With 3 ends to play Epsom were 6 shots behind, but managed to scrape through with a win by 1 shot by scoring 7 shots over these ends. Final Score: Epsom 73 Auriol 50 |

East Surrey League - Men Details: Rink 2 Stefan Tomm Roy Doughty John Warren David Sowdon lost 17 - 27 After 10 ends Epsom was only 1 shot adrift 10 - 11, but the second half belonged to Sutton when they scored 16 shots to Epsom's 7 shots. Rink 3 Brian Kenyon Ron Snow Peter Miller Les Owen won 21 - 19. Epsom went in front after end 2 and after 10 ends were 11- 9 ahead. Sutton drew level, 16 - 16 after 16 ends, but Epsom forged ahead 20 - 16 after 19 ends. Epsom then dropped 3 shots on the 20th end & Sutton held 2 shots on the final end for a win until Les bowled his last bowl. He glanced off a wing bowl to secure the shot to win by just 2 shots. Rink 4 Geoff Purrott Bob Blaker Terry Hoye Jim Scott won 24 - 13 This rink had an excellent first 10 ends when they led 15 - 3. Sutton came back into the game a little in the last part of the game, but Epsom won comfortably by 11 shots. Rink 5 Martin Harbottle George Sperring Pat Buckley Graham Naish won 19 - 12 This turned out to be an excellent game. After 10 ends Epsom was behind 7 - 8. After 15 ends they led 13 -- 9 and on end 19 scored 4 shots to help secure a 7 shot victory. Final Score: Epsom 81 Sutton 71 Epsom 5 points Sutton 1 point |

Bowls England Top Club - Over 60's Mixed Double Rink Details: Rink 3 Geoff Purrott Anne Hoffmann Gill Sperring Pat Buckley lost 10 - 22 Epsom was behind throughout this game. After 10 ends they were 8 - 10 down and 9 - 16 behind after 15 ends. Cheam finished strongly eventually winning by 12 shots. Rink 4 Maggie O'Sullivan Lyz Warren Terry Hoye David Sowdon won 20 - 14 Epsom dominated this rink throughout the game until end 17. They led 11 - 4 after 10 ends, 19 - 5 after 16 ends, but Cheam finished well scoring 9 shots to Epsom's 1 shot over the remaining 4 ends. Epsom won by 6 shots. Final Score: Epsom 30 Cheam 36 |

v Epsom Park Details: Rink 1 Arthur Upward Olive Phillips Roy Doughty John Huxford lost 16 - 23 Epsom was behind 6 - 11 after 10 ends and 8 - 16 adrift after 15 ends. Despite scoring 5 shots on end 18 Epsom still lost by 7 shots. Rink 2 Bill Lawrence Mary Bragg Lyz Warren Ron Mew won 22 - 21 Epsom had the better of the first 13 ends when they led 13 - 10, but Epsom Park came back well in the latter stages of the game. Epsom were leading by 5 shots going into the last end & just managed to hang on to a victory by 1 shot. Rink 5 Bob Blaker Clive Banderet Sandra Huxford Marilyn Walsh won 23 - 19 Epsom got off to a really bad start on this rink when they found themselves 1 - 11 down after just 6 ends. They then had 4 good ends and went ahead 13 - 12 after 10 ends. They then played very well in the last half of the game and won 23 - 19. They continued to outplay Purley and won by 9 shots Rink 3 Brian Kenyon John Warren Ron Mew David Sowdon won 25 - 11. Epsom also had a very good first 10 ends when they led 15 - 6. They continued playing well and won by 14 shots. Rink 4 Geoff Purrott John Huxford Terry Hoye Jim Scott lost 15 - 18 This rink led 9 - 5 after 10 ends & 14 - 9 after 15 ends. Purley had the better of the last 6 ends scoring 9 shots to Epsom's 1 shot to win by 3 shots. Rink 5 Bill Lawrence Tony Dunn Martin Harbottle Peter Miller won 21 - 16 This rink raced into a 12 - 2 lead after 10 ends. Purley came back well to level the scores, 13 - 13 after 16 ends. Bowls England - Top Club (Top 11) Details: Two Wood Singles - Brian Kenyon won this game comfortably 16 - 7. The game was completed after 15 ends. Four Wood Singles: David Sowdon had a very good close contest up to 13 ends when he was just 1 shot adrift, 12 - 13. However, his opponent scored on each of the next 6 ends to beat David 21 - 12. Pairs: John Hart & Graham Naish dominated this game right from the start. They led 15 - 4 after 10 ends and went on to win by 13 shots. Triples: Bill Lawrence, Martin Harbottle & Peter Miller were outplayed in this game. They were 3 - 11 down after 10 ends and went on to lose by 8 shots. Fours: Geoff Purrott George Sperring Terry Hoye Pat Buckley. This team of 4 had an excellent win against a very strong Chipstead team. They led 10 - 7 after 10 ends, 20 - 8 after 15 ends and went on to win by 10 shots. Rink 4 Brian Kenyon Eileen Mills Gill Sperring Pat Buckley won 25 - 9 Epsom made a poor start finding themselves 0 - 6 down after just 4 ends. They got back into the game very well and took the lead 10 - 9 after 12 ends. They then went on to win all the remaining ends scoring a total of 15 shots to win by 16 shots. Mixed Friendly v Insurance BA Details: Rink 1 Audrey Jones Marilyn Walsh Derek Hoffmann John Warren lost 9 - 30 This rink started well, but lost the lead on the 9th end, 6 - 7. The Insurance BA dominated the game from then on & went on to win by 21 shots. Rink 3 Sandra Huxford Mary Bragg Tony Dunn Ron Mew lost 20 - 21 As the score suggests this was a very close game.. However, Epsom found themselves 6 - 14 down after 10 ends, but came back well to be 2 shots behind on the 18th end. Needing 2 to win the rink on the final end Epsom just managed to score 1 shot. Rink 5 Ruth Nixon Derek Jones Len Philpott John Huxford won 33 - 11 Epsom dominated this game right from the start. They led 10 - 4 after 10 ends, 21 - 7 after 15 ends and went on to win comfortably by 22 shots. Rink 6 Anne Hoffmann David Bragg Jan Allum Terry Hoye drew 20 - 20 After 10 ends Epsom was 8 - 10 behind. They were further behind, 14 - 19 after 17 ends, but finished strongly to secure a draw. They dominated the last part of the game finally winning by 8 shots. Rink 3 Brian Kenyon Bob Blaker John Warren David Sowdon lost 16 - 20. After 10 ends Epsom was 7 - 12 behind. After 15 ends they went further behind, 10 - 17. However, they made a strong comeback, but lost by 4 shots. Rink 4 Bill Lawrence Ron Snow Martin Harbottle Peter Miller won 23 - 21 This turned out to be quite a game for Epsom. They found themselves 7 - 18 down after 12 ends, but then won the next 6 ends scoring a total of 16 shots to take the lead 23 - 18. Warlingham Park won the last 3 ends, but were restricted to just 1 shot on each of these ends. Epsom won an astonishing game by 2 shots. Bowls England Top 10 - Ladies Details: Singles: Lyz Warren played in the singles and was involved in a very close match. After 10 ends she led 11 - 7 and after 16 ends held a 5 shot advantage, 14 - 9. After 22 ends the Tongham player drew level 17 - 17 and went on to win 21 - 18. Pairs: Maggie O'Sullivan & Gill Sperring played in the pairs. This turned out to be a very close game also. After 10 ends Epsom led 11 - 8 and continued to keep in front for the rest of the game to win 19 - 17. Triples: Sandra Huxford, Marilyn Walsh & Eileen Mills played in the Triples. After 4 ends the scores were level 3 - 3, but Tongham then dominated the game winning 9 of the remaining ends to win 21 - 9. Bowls England Top Club Details: Two Wood Singles: Stefan Tomm represented Epsom in this discipline. This was a very close match with the scores level 8 - 8 after 12 ends. Stefan had the better of the last 8 ends eventually winning 15 - 11. Four Wood Singles: Brian Kenyon represented the Club in this match. This was also a very close game. Brian held a 4 shot lead, 11 - 7, after 10 ends but lost the lead, 16 - 17 after 16 ends. Brian finished strongly winning 21 - 18. Pairs: John Hart/Graham Naish After 10 ends John & Graham were ahead 13 - 5, but Ashtead scored 6 shots over the next 3 ends to narrow the gap. The last 7 were evenly contested, but Epsom went on to win 21 - 17. Triples: Martin Harbottle/Peter Miller/Les Owen Epsom was on top throughout this game. After 10 ends they led 13 - 6 and increased their lead to 25 - 8 after 15 ends. They went on to win comfortably 29 - 8. Fours: Geoff Purrott/Terry Hoye/George Sperring/Pat Buckley This was a very even contest during the first 10 ends when Ashtead held a 1 shot advantage, 8 - 9. Brian Kenyon Brian is home from Florida with the coveted Man of the Tournament Trophy. Brian entered the the USL BA South Eastern Division Tournament which is played over 6 days. Each discipline is played over 2 days, 3 games per day. Brian won in the 4's, came 3rd in the pairs & 4th in the singles. Not a bad record. Congratulations on your success once again in sunny Florida. |

Whist Drives May I take this opportunity to thank all those members who supported the whist drives over the past months also to those ladies and gentlemen who supplied cakes for these evenings. This year we had a close points system between Heather Pigden, Janette Dunford. Heather being the top Ladies Champion by half a point. Colin Hibbs League Results for the 2012 Season Statistics for 2012 (last years figure in brackets) Epsom played 17 (18) matches, won 7 (8), lost 10(9) & drew 0 (1). Shots for –185 (206), Shots against 239 (223). The best win was 17 – 4 against Warlingham Park (17 – 6 against Ashtead). A total of 26 (30) players were used throughout the season. NB The final table received from the organisers record 7 wins, but the results below indicate 6. Hopefully this 'error' will be sorted out very soon.
