Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup Epsom played at home in the Yonwin Cup on Wednesday 29th May 2019 against Wallington. They won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks but won overall 59 - 50. Epsom was 20 - 27 down across the 3 rinks after 10 ends, but were ahead 38 - 37 after 15 ends. With rink 5 having won by 27 shots Wallington's rink 3 conceded after 18 ends & their rink 2 also conceded after 20 ends. Details: Rink 2 Dave Pearce Bob Blaker Les Owen Terry Berry lost 16 - 18 Epsom was 6 - 10 down after 10 ends, but took the lead 14 - 13 on the 15th end. They lost by 2 shots. Rink 3 Stefan Tomm Terry Hoye John Warren Peter Miller lost 9 - 25 Epsom led 4 - 3 after 5 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 4 - 15 down. They lost by 16 shots. Rink 5 Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Dickie Day John Meningen won 34 - 7 This was an excellent win by this rink with all players playing well. They won 15 of the 21 ends. They led 15 - 5 after 14 ends and won the next 5 ends to go 29 - 5 ahead. They won by 27 shots. Final Score: Epsom 59 Wallington 50 Dickie Day played his first game in this Competition. Epsom play Cuddington at home in the next round (to be played by 02/07/19). Did you know Epsom have entered the Yonwin Cup every year since 1976. They have won the Cup on 7 occasions & been in 5 other finals. In 2016 Epsom reached the Final without losing a rink. The best win was in 2015 v Ewell Village 77 - 36 (+41) & v Cuddington in 2018, 77 - 36 (+41). |

Men's Friendly Epsom travelled to Redhill on Sunday 26th May 2019 to play a Triples match. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won 55 - 54. Epsom were losing overall going into the last ends, but rink 4 scored 1 shot & rink 5 scored 2 shots to secure 1 shot win. Details: Rink 4 David Ganney Frank Thompson John Warren won 19 - 12 Epsom led all afternoon. They were 10 - 3 ahead after 10 ends & won by 7 shots. Rink 5 Ted Ray Derek Martin Phil Sims won 20 - 14 Epsom led 11 - 8 after 10 ends, but dropped 5 shots on the next end to go behind. They won 6 of the remaining ends to win by 6 shots. Rink 6 Mike James Guest Bob Blaker lost 16 - 28 Not a good afternoon for Epsom on this rink. They lost by 12 shots. Final Score: Epsom 55 Redhill 54
Did you know Since 1992 Epsom have played Redhill 23 times and won 19, lost 4 & there were 5 matches cancelled. The best win came in 2000 when Epsom won 113 – 53 (+60 shots). In this season Epsom played 25 Friendly matches, won 12, lost 12, drew 1 & there were 3 matches cancelled. In 2019 Epsom are scheduled to play 13 Friendly matches. Epsom have won the last 8 matches against Redhill. |

East Surrey League - Men Epsom travelled to Shirley Park on Saturday 25th May 2019. They won on all 4 rinks & the match 104 - 53 (12 - 0). Last year Epsom lost at Shirley Park so this turned out to be an excellent win. Details: Rink 2 Dave Pearce Bob Blaker Terry Berry Les Owen won 26 - 9 Epsom dominated this rink winning 16 of the 21 ends. They were 2 - 5 down after 5 ends, but won the next 7 ends to go ahead 13 - 5. Over the last 9 ends Epsom outscored Shirley Park 13 - 1 to go on and win by 17 shots. Rink 3 Stefan Tomm Stefan Lukatschat John Warren Jim Scott won 27 - 14 Epsom was 5 - 6 down after 7 ends, but won the next 7 ends to go ahead 19 - 6. They went on to win by 13 shots. Rink 4 Simon Meller Geoff Purrott Dickie Day John Meningen won 26 - 13 Epsom led 12 - 5 after 10 ends & 22 - 9 after 15 ends. They won by 13 shots. Rink 5 Keith Roberts Terry Hoye John Huxford Peter Miller won 25 - 17 Epsom raced into a 17 - 1 lead after just 7 ends, but Epsom only won 5 of the remaining ends being outscored by Shirley Park 8 - 16 but won by 8 shots. Final Score: Epsom 104 Shirley Park 53 Epsom 12 points Shirley Park 0 points Did you know Epsom have played Shirley Park 35 times, won 18 & lost 17 times. Epsom struggled in the early years against Shirley Park. From 1987 to 2003 Epsom only won 4 of the 17 matches played, but in the last 14 years Epsom have won 14 & lost 4. (NB Clubs played each other twice since 2015. Epsom did not play Shirley Park in 2017 as they were in Division 2) Epsom have only lost once (in 2018) in the last 8 matches. The best win came in 2015 when Epsom won 113 – 37 (12 – 0). The best rink win (39 – 6) also came in this match. Shirley Park were founded in 1928. |

Men's Friendly Epsom men played Purley at home on Thursday 23rd May 2019 to play a Triples match. They drew on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 38 - 62. This defeat was the first in 38 matches dating back to 31/08/16 & was the worst defeat since 28/05/13 when Epsom lost against Chipstead 62 - 103. Details: Rink 1 Geoff Purrott Ted Ray David Bragg lost 15 - 20 Epsom was 1 - 9 down after 5 ends & 11 - 20 behind after 15 ends. They lost by 5 shots. Rink 2 David Ganney Frank Thompson Fred Read lost 6 - 25 Epsom struggled on this rink & were 1 - 17 down after 10 ends. They lost by 19 shots. Rink 4 Jim Martin Mike James Keith Roberts drew 17 - 17 Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends & 14 - 13 after 15 ends. The scores ended up level. Final Score: Epsom 38 Purley 62 |

Ladies Friendly Epsom Ladies played against Banstead Neville at home on Tuesday 21st May 2019. This was a Triples match. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink, drew on 1 rink & won the match 51 - 48. Epsom Ladies were behind across the 3 rinks right up to the last 3 ends. They trailed 23 - 30 after 10 ends, 42 - 44 after 15 ends, but outscored Banstead Neville 9 - 4 over the last 3 ends to win by 3 shots. Details: Rink 4 Sue Needham Frances Suttonwood Marilyn Walsh won 20 - 12 Epsom was 3 - 7 down after 6 ends, but won the next 6 ends to go 15 - 7 ahead. They went on to win by 8 shots. Rink 5 Lesley South Sandy Cooper Sylvia Smart lost 12 - 17 This rink was behind all afternoon. They trailed 3 - 11 after 10 ends & lost by 5 shots. Rink 6 Rose Price Sandie Harvey Heather Pigden drew 19 - 19 Epsom was 9 - 16 down on the 11th end, but scored 6 shots over the next 2 ends to be just 1 behind (15 - 16). They went further behind on the next end, 15 - 18 but won the next 3 ends to go ahead 19 - 18. On the final end Epsom dropped 1 shot to leave the rink all square. Bowls England - Two Fours Epsom travelled to Old Coulsdon on Sunday 19th May 2019 to play in the above Competition. Epsom won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 28 - 37. Details: Rink 1 Dave Pearce Stefan Lukatschat Andrew Turnbull Terry Berry lost 10 - 20 v James Cooper Peter Quaintance Mark Dutton Simon Clark Epsom got off to a slow start & were 5 - 9 down after 10 ends. After 12 ends they were 6 - 10 behind & were outscored by Old Coulsdon 4 - 10 over the remaining ends. They lost by 10 shots. Rink 5 Howard Ellis Keith Roberts Bob Blaker Dickie Day won 18 - 17 v Andrew Barclay David Williams Robert Wicks Paul Bennett This was a very good performance by Epsom on this rink playing a strong Old Coulsdon side, The scores were level 3 - 3 after 4 ends, but Epsom won the next 4 ends to go 10 - 3 ahead. They still led 13 - 11 after 15 ends & went on to win by 1 shot. (20 ends). Dickie Day played in his first game in this Competition for Epsom Bowling Club. |

Surrey Un Badged Singles Graham Coleman qualifies for his Surrey County Badge by beating Paul Mahoney (Epsom Park) 21 - 19. Details: Graham struggled to find the pace of the green at the start finding himself 0 - 10 down after 7 ends. He then scored two 2's to get on the score board, but was still behind 9 - 13 on the 15th end. Graham fought back well & went ahead for the first time 19 - 18 on the 25th end. The scores were level on the next end & Graham scored two singles to qualify for his County Badge after 28 ends. Congratulations Graham from all at Epsom Bowling Club. |

Bowls England - Tony Allcock Trophy Epsom travelled the short distance to Cheam on Wednesday 15th May 2019 to play in the above Competition. This turned out to be an outstanding win, particularly on 1 rink. Epsom won 42 - 33. Three Epsom players played in this Competition for the very first time - Sandie Cooper, Stefan Tomm & Heather Pigden. Details: Rink 5 Sandie Cooper Eileen Mills Stefan Tomm Brian Kenyon won 23 - 10 v N Haigh B Lowe M Appleford M McDonagh Epsom led 12 - 2 after 6 ends & 16 - 5 after 10 ends. They still led 21 - 8 after 15 ends & Cheam conceded on the 17th end. Rink 6 Frances Suttonwood Heather Pigden Pat Buckley Bob Blaker lost 19 - 23 v J Fitzgerald D Rowlands G Fitzgerald J Parsons Epsom led 13 - 8 after 10 ends & 18 - 11 after 14 ends. Ladies Friendly Epsom Ladies played their second friendly match of the season against Malden Manor at home on Tuesday 14th May 2019. This was a Triples match. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won the match 30 - 29. Details: Rink 2 Sandy Cooper Ruth Baker Ruth Nixon won 15 - 8 Epsom led 7 - 4 after 9 ends & 10 - 8 after 15 ends. Epsom won the last 3 ends to win by 7 shots. Rink 3 Sandie Harvey Frances Suttonwood Sylvia Smart lost 15 - 21 Epsom led 8 - 6 after 7 ends, but lost the lead over the next 2 ends. They were 12 - 18 down after 15 ends & lost by 6 shots. Final Score: Epsom 30 Malden Manor 29 |

Mixed Friendly Epsom played their second match of the season on Sunday 12th May 2019 at home against the Insurance B A. They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 90 - 56. Epsom was ahead across the 4 rinks all afternoon. They led 63 - 38 after 15 ends & won by 34 shots. Details: Rink 2 Lesley South Mike Cooper Ted Ray Howard Ellis won 25 - 12 Epsom had a good lead, 18 - 3 after 10 ends & were 22 - 6 in front after 18 ends. They won by 13 shots. Rink 4 Rosemary Price Sandie Harvey Frank Thompson Bob Blaker won 30 - 6 This was a good win for Epsom. They led 16 - 6 after 15 ends & won by 24 shots. Rink 5 Sylvia Smart Richard Price Mike James Geoff Purrott won 21 - 19 Epsom led 18 - 10 after 15 ends, but the Insurance came back into the game well over the last 6 ends. Epsom won by 2 shots. Rink 6 Sandy Cooper Frances Suttonwood Brian Kenyon John Warren lost 14 - 19 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom went behind 8 - 10 on the 11th end. East Surrey League - Men Epsom played their second ESL League match away at Sutton on Saturday 11th May 2019. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 79 - 68 (8 - 4). Epsom led all afternoon across the 4 rinks. They led 37 - 33 after 10 ends, 71 - 59 after 18 ends & won by 11 shots. Details: Rink 7 Howard Ellis Graham Coleman Terry Hoye John Meningen lost 15 - 18 This was a very close game all afternoon. Epsom was 1 shot down on the 10th end (7 - 8) & still 1 shot behind on the 15th end (12 - 13). They lost by 3 shots. Rink 8 Dave Pearce Bob Blaker Terry Berry Les Owen won 26 - 15 This was an excellent performance by all 4 players on this rink. They led 13 - 4 after 10 ends, 23 - 12 after 15 ends & went on to win by 11 shots. Rink 9 Ted Ray Simon Meller John Warren Peter Miller lost 12 - 19 Epsom was behind all afternoon on this rink. They were 8 - 14 down after 15 ends & lost by 7 shots. Rink 10 Stefan Lukatschat Geoff Purrott Andrew Turnbull Jim Scott won 26 - 16 Epsom was behind 7 - 10 on the 7th end. but went ahead 2 ends later & kept the lead for the rest of the game. They led 19 - 13 after 15 ends & won by 10 shots. Final Score: Epsom 79 Sutton 68 Epsom 8 points Sutton 4 points Did you know Epsom have played Sutton 34 times, won 19 & lost 15 times. The best win came in 1998 when Epsom won 105 – 53 (6 – 0). The best rink win (34 – 8) also came in this match. In the last 10 years Epsom have won 9 Matches & lost 6 matches. President's Team v Captain's Team This traditional game played on Bank Holiday Monday had a very good turn out. The President's team won on all 4 rinks & 99 - 39. (18 ends played). Before the game members enjoyed bacon rolls & tea/coffee then endured a fairly cold afternoon bowling. Rink 2 Sandie Cooper George Sperring/Derek Hoffmann Dave Pearce John Huxford won 23 - 9 v Rosemary Price Derek Martin Les Owen Marilyn Walsh-Hoye The scores were level 7 - 7 after 10 ends, but John's team won 6 of the last 8 ends to win by 14 shots. Rink 3 Mick Wood Sandy Harvey Frank Thompson Stefan Tomm won 28 - 5 v Frances Suttonwood Mike James Trish Southgate Terry Hoye Stefan's team dominated this rink. They led 13 - 3 after 10 ends & won by 23 shots. East Surrey League - Men Epsom played their first ESL League match away at Purley Bury on Sunday 5th May 2019. They won on 1 rink, lost on 3 rinks & lost the match 60 - 80 (2 - 10). Epsom dominated this match right up to the 16th end. After 10 ends Epsom led 45 - 27 across the 4 rinks & 54 - 49 after 15 ends. They went behind 55 - 57 on the 17th end & lost by 20 shots. Details: Rink 1 Dave Pearce David Bragg Martin Harbottle John Meningen lost 10 - 21 Epsom led 10 - 9 after 13 ends, but lost all the remaining ends to lose by 11 shots. Did you know Epsom have won their last 8 matches against Purley Bury. This was the first defeat for 4 years. This was also the first time in 13 seasons that Epsom have lost the opening game in this League. Since the League began in 1987 Epsom have played Purley Bury 15 times and won 10, lost 5 The best win came in 2016 when Epsom won 100 - 59 (10 - 2). Dickie Day played his first East Surrey League for Epsom Bowling Club & becomes the 158th member to play in the East Surrey League since 1987. Andrew Turnbull played his 50th game in this League. Since the League began Epsom have played 402 matches, won 250, lost 142 & drawn 7 (3 games were abandoned). |

Men's Friendly Epsom played against Carshalton Beeches on Saturday 4th May 2019 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 60 - 46. Epsom extend their unbeaten run in Men's Friendly matches to 38. Details: Rink 2 Ted Ray Frank Thompson Brian Kenyon Bob Blaker won 17 - 13 Epsom led 11 - 5 after 10 ends & 15 - 7 after 15 ends. They were 1 - 22 down after 10 ends & lost by 28 shots. Men's Friendly Epsom played their very first Men's match of the season on Sunday 28th April 2019 against Chipstead. This was a Triples match. Epsom won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 86 - 45. Epsom last lost a Men's Friendly match on the 31st August 2016 against Cheam Fields (50 - 68). In total Epsom have won the last 37 Men's matches - an excellent record. Details: Rink 1 David Bragg Les Owen Terry Hoye lost 10 - 20 Epsom got off to a poor start finding themselves 0 - 10 down after just 5 ends. They were still behind 9 - 18 after 15 ends & lost by 10 shots. Rink 2 Ted Ray Andrew Turnbull John Meningen won 15 - 12 Epsom led all afternoon on this rink. They led 11 - 8 after 10 ends, 13 - 11 after 15 ends & won by 3 shots. Rink 5 Howard Ellis Geoff Purrott John Warren won 27 - 7 Epsom dominated this game winning 13 of the 18 ends. They travelled to Reigate Priory for a Mixed Friendly match and won on 1 rink, drew on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 52 - 59. The match was played over 16 ends because of the poor weather. Details: Rink 2 Audrey Jones Terry Hoye David Ganney lost 7 - 16 Epsom led 6 - 5 after 8 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 6 - 12 down. They lost by 9 shots. Rink 3 Rosemary Price Marilyn Walsh-Hoye Ted Ray drew 14 - 14 After 10 ends Epsom trailed 5 - 7, but going into the last end Epsom led 14 - 9. They dropped a count of 5 on the last end to draw the rink. Rink 4 Sandy Cooper Richard Price John Warren lost 14 - 15 Epsom led 10 - 9 after 10 ends, but on the 13th end they were 11 - 15 down. They won the last 3 ends, but lost by just 1 shot. Rink 5 Lesley South Mick Cooper Brian Collis won 17 - 14 After 9 ends the scores were level 10 - 10.
