Indoor Friendly
Epsom played the first of 3 Friendly Indoor Matches at Donyngs on
Sunday 6th October 2013. They lost on all 3 rinks.
Details:
Rink 2 Terry Berry Lyz Warren
Martin Harbottle Peter Miller lost 17 - 21
Epsom got off to an excellent start
on this rink when they led 13 - 5 after 10 ends. However,
Donyngs came back strongly over the second half outscoring Epsom 16
- 4 to win by 4 shots. This was an very good performance by
Epsom as 2 of the players do not belong to an Indoor Bowling Club.
Rink 4 Howard Ellis Ruth
Nixon Tony Dunn John Warren lost 22 - 27
The story on this rink was quite
similar to rink 2. Epsom led 15 - 7 after 10 ends, but then
lost 6 ends in a row dropping a total of 17 shots to go behind 15 -
24. They fought back well closing the gap to lose by 5 shots.
Rink 6
Bill Lawrence Peter Humphreys Jan Allum Geoff Purrott
lost 15 - 30
This
rink played well for 11 ends when they were just 1 shot behind, 10 -
11. However, they had 5 bad ends dropping a total of 12 shots
to go behind 10 - 23. They eventually lost by 15 shots.
Once again a good performance on this rink as they too had 2 non
indoor players.

Sutton & District Bowling Association Finals Day
Saturday 21st September 2013
The
Sutton & District Bowling Association Finals Day held on Saturday
21st September 2013 was organised by Les Owen who is the Delegate
for Epsom Bowling Club. He gathered a team of members who turned up
at various times during the day to help in different areas.
The day began at 7.30am when Peter
Miller, Bill Lawrence & Les Owen went to Sainsbury’s to buy the food
for the day. Helpers began to arrive early on in the day with Tony
Brydges heading for the kitchen to cook bacon & sausages. Other
helpers in the kitchen included Bob Blaker, Lyz & John Warren, Brian
Kenyon, Bill Lawrence & David Bragg who dealt with cutting rolls in
half, slicing tomatoes & cucumber etc.
Ruth Baker attended and helped Lyz &
John all morning with serving Tea/Coffee & rolls. They were kept
busy.
In the afternoon Pat Felloni &
Claire Collis served tea/coffee & cake & they too were very busy.
Nancy Smillie had made several cakes together with Ruth Baker &
Denise Owen. These went down very well.
Tony Dunn & Robert York manned the
Car Park & managed to squeeze in many more cars than usual with no
one blocked in – not an easy task with some drivers!!
John Hart ran the Bar all day & at
times was on his own for long periods. Unfortunately two of the
volunteers allocated to help were selected to play in a match at
Cheam Fields in the afternoon.
Peter Miller has worked tirelessly
throughout the season on the green and put in many an extra hour
particularly for these Finals. His hard work was rewarded as the
green played extremely well all day. Bill Lawrence (who else) was
responsible with several others for putting out the scoreboards etc.
before the games & again brought in all the equipment with another
team of helpers after the games were finished.
At 11.50am Cyril Newman, Club Senior
Vice President, handed over the green to the Sutton & District
President and two games promptly began at 12 o’clock. Mike Gray
from Cheam won the Ted Pierce Trophy (for delegates) & Cheam Fields
won the Arthur Hughes Triples. Martin Harbottle marked the Ted
Pierce Trophy.
At 2.30pm the other games started
and the many spectators watched some excellent bowling across the
green.
Chessington won the Yonwin Cup,
Supreme the BLESMA Pairs, Cheam the St Raphael Mixed Pairs & Geoff
Farnish from Wallington won the coveted Paston Cup. Les Owen marked
the Paston Cup.
After the games were completed
Trophies were handed out and the green was handed back to Les Owen
on behalf of Epsom Bowling Club.
The day turned out to be quite
profitable for the Club with over £115 raised selling food and
Tea/Coffee & £250+ on the bar.
Les would like to thank everyone who
helped make the day very successful. It is hoped to hold these
finals again in 2014.

Club Night
Club Night, organised by Cyril Newman, took place throughout the
season on a Friday evening.
This was well attended each Friday and the season ended with a
celebration supper on Friday 20th August 2013.
This was attended by 30 members who sat down and enjoyed a
ploughman's supper. Cash prizes were awarded to Top scoring lady
Janet Newman and Top playing gentlemen John Warren.
At the end of each Friday evening during the season Cyril gave out
‘dodgy’ prizes. These were always well received. Fines which were
also imposed on members during Club Nights. These were given for a
range of ‘misdemeaners’ which included wrong bias, wrong stickers, &
other ‘silly’ incidents.
The amount collected from these fines over all the games came to
£70.00. This was increased by a £30 donation from Eddie Needham who
sold hand made wooden pens. This money will be donated to Help 4
Heroes.
Whist Drives
Whist Drives will commence on 3rd October @ 7.15pm. See notice
board for further dates during the winter months.
Thank you
Cyril Newman

Nobby’s Triples
James crowned king as Purrott falls off perch
This was a very enjoyable and successful Nobby's year with record
attendances and a dramatic last -day twist when the positions A B C
D ended up B D A C.
Geoff Purrott was leading for all of the second half of the season
with Mike James in second place and 20 points behind at one stage.
Frank Thompson in third didn't attend the last day and the dark
horse and cup holder Sid Bailey leapt into second place.
It just shows that a maximum win of 10 points can soon close the gap
on a maximum loss of 6.
Many thanks to John Hart for organising this Competition throughout
the season.
