History of the Eric Hingston Cup

Eric was a member of Epsom Bowling Club from 1988 until his death in 2001. He was the Club Treasurer 1989 – 1997. He was also President of King George Field I B C.

In the 1980/1990’s during the winter months Epsom had several fixtures with Indoor Bowling Clubs.  Even travelling to as far as Brighton & had in some years had 8/10 fixtures.

One of these was at King George Field Indoor Bowling Club & our first recorded fixture was in 1985.

Most of the Epsom players at this time did not belong to Indoor Clubs, but saw these games as an opportunity to experience Indoor Bowling.

After Eric passed away his wife Ivy donated a Cup to be competed for when Epsom played King George Field I B C – appropriately named ‘The Eric Hingston Cup’.

Since 2001 there have been 14 meetings between the Clubs with Epsom winning on 3 occasions.  The wins came in 2013, 2022 & 2024.

In 2001 & for a few more years the game involved 7 rinks which certainly stretched Epsom Bowling Club – hence the results. It should be noted that all the King George Field members were all regular Indoor players.

Apart from last year for some reason unknown the last time this fixture took place was in 2014 & involved just 3 rinks.

Spitfire League

The Spitfire League is played at Donyngs Indoor Bowling Club in the Winter months. It is played as a round robin competition (usually 2 groups), followed by a semi final & final.  Epsom first entered this Competition in the 2014/15 season. They have played every winter since (except the COVID years – 2020/21).

In the first few seasons Epsom fielded teams mainly of members who did not play indoors on a regular basis. The last few years, however, most of the teams consist of members who belong to several indoor Clubs.

Since the 2014/15 season Epsom have played 44 matches, won 18 & lost 26.  They reached the Semi Final in 2018/19 & lost in the final against Purley Bury in the very first season entered.

Epsom have played Reigate Priory 7 times, won 4 & lost 3.

Appearances

55 members of Epsom Bowling Club have played in this Competition since 2014/15 and the most appearances are:-

Fred Read who has played in 34 matches, Brian Kenyon 33, Martin Harbottle 25 & Eileen Mills 21.
