Sutton & District Bowling Association

The Yonwin Cup

Sutton & District Bowling Association was formed in 1949 and the YONWIN Cup started in 1950.  Epsom Bowling Club affiliated to the Association in 1976 and has competed every year since.

This competition is for three rinks from each club playing each other on the same green.  The winners being decided by the total shots scored on all three rinks.  In the event of a tie at the end of the game each rink would play an extra end to decide the winner.

Charles William Yonwin and his wife Annie formerly from Gravesend lived in Thicket Road Sutton during W.W.11.  Their son William Alfred was killed during the war and had left a widow Barbara Mercy living in Sutton.  William was a 26 year old gunner in the Royal Artillery.  He died on 17th July 1943 and is buried in Alexandra War Memorial Cemetery.  He was the only person named Yonwin in any of the three services killed in the war.

From old minute books found at Rose Hill B.C. the following information was discovered - on the 25th October 1949 Rose Hill B.C. held a meeting in the Angel Hotel.  Under the heading of Bowls League a letter from Mr Yonwin offering a cup for competition in a League of Local Clubs was read.  The secretary was instructed to insert a notice of motion for the next A.G.M. as follows. “ To consider the support the Club would give to the suggested formation of a Sutton & District B.A. and/or league”.  At the inaugural meeting of Sutton & District B.A. held on 6th December 1949 it was agreed that the Yonwin Cup would be played for on a knock out basis between thirteen founder clubs then affiliated to the Association.  In the first round Rose Hill were beaten by Cuddington who went on to be beaten by Ewell in the final.

No other reference has been found on Charles Yonwin and it is assumed he was a member of Rose Hill B.C.

The Constitution of the Association provides for the return of the Yonwin Cup to Rose Hill B.C. should the Association cease to exist.

The Runners Up in The Yonwin Cup receive the Randolf Cup.

Epsom Men won the Arthur Hughes Triples for the first time in 2021 beating Chessington 24 - 11.
