A message from your President Maureen Trumble

Welcome to our new season. This winter seems to have lasted a very long time. Hopefully the grey days are gone - it’s got to change soon hasn’t it?
As always we must thank all the members who have worked so hard behind the scenes this winter either altering or repairing jobs. As you may know more help is always needed on every front.
I do hope that everyone who has been ill is feeling better. My husband, Percy, has had a rough time lately. He has been in and out of hospital including a hair raising ride down the M25 to St Peter’s at Chertsey. Have you ever been in an ambulance with bells and lights flashing - it’s quite something. He has now had a pacemaker fitted so hope for an improvement. We shall soon have a pacemaker’s club like the Zippers as it seems we have a few potential members.
Sadly Kath Tyrrell has died and many will remember her and husband Dennis (former President). They loved the Club and it’s friendship.
See you on the green
Maureen

Tributes to Jack Gee

For your interest the following is the address made by Tony Jackman in the Club House after Jack Gee’s funeral.

On behalf of Epsom Bowling Club, I welcome you all here this afternoon.
It is indeed a very sad occasion for us all to remember and pay our respects to Jack Gee. I speak only of his association with our Club. A social member for such a brief time, but one who gained our affection and he in turn appreciated the kindness shown to him by all our club members.
Coincidently he was born a few months after our club was formed in 1909, and in our Centenary year Jack was affectionly looked on as our Centenary mascot. He celebrated his 100th birthday with a party here at the club arranged by MaryAnn, grandson Stephen and our ladies.
Jack joined us in the summer of 2008 having moved into a flat opposite in Worple Road. Before long he walked over to the club made himself known, was welcomed, and settled down to watch play. The rest is history in as much that he made so many friends here, taking up his regular seat in the gazebo, enjoying a drink and chats with whoever was around.
He attended and enjoyed the club social events and never ceased telling everyone how much he appreciated the company. At the club awards dinner held here in October I did congratulate him on behalf of the club on reaching his 101st birthday. He was so pleased and responded cheerfully when all assembled applauded. At that time it seemed that he would go on forever.
Not only did he appreciate the friendship of club members but also his work colleagues, who often took him out for a meal. In these later times his carer Peggy looked after him with daily visits, keeping the flat clean and tidy, doing the shopping, washing and ironing. Again he was so appreciative.
Most Sunday mornings I would visit him for a chat usually followed by a walk up to the pillar box in Ashley Road or over to the Club for a change. Our chats would usually focus on our common interest in engineering, his knowledge of Shakespeare, rugby and boxing with also a mention of his childhood and grim conditions at that time.
He did read and spent time daily writing out multiplication tables to keep his mind active. His one fear was the delivery of official brown envelopes, which like most of us, did not go down well.
He loved a joke. One of his favourites was of the time he had a nightmare trying to push Catherine Zeta Jones out of his bed.
He would often demonstrate his daily routine of exercises which I personally would have difficulty in doing. Except for his knees his condition both physically and mentally was marvellous for a man of that age. Thankfully, he continued to enjoy life right up to the stroke, but he did not deserve to suffer those last five weeks in hospital.
He will be sadly missed.

Jack was a very interesting man. I wish that I had met him years ago as he enjoyed his sports. He wished that he had taken up bowls years ago as I found out after a few drinks with him on various occasions. He enjoyed everybody’s company at the bowls club. He will be sadly missed by one and all

Martin Harbottle

A couple of years ago a gentleman (we now know as Jack Gee) appeared at the edge of the bowling green. Those of us who were playing thought it was someone’s dad or granddad. Anyway he was approached and asked if we could we help. He said he had moved into accommodation across the road and wandered what was going on.
The rest we now know.
What a wonderful gentleman he was. I wonder how many of you know that he asked to join the Club. He was told that as he would not be bowling it would be the Social Membership fee. He refused to accept this and insisting on becoming a full member - and this he did.
He made generous donations to the Centenary year and was so kind in so many other ways.
Everyone at the Club would welcome Jack when he appeared. It was a real struggle for him at times, but members always rallied round to make sure he was comfortable and had his pint.

We will all miss him

Les Owen

Laurie Garrett            Laurie - 60 Years a Bowler
How can I condense such a span of time in a few paragraphs? I will try.
Laurie began bowling Club in 1950 when he joined Epsom Park Bowling Club where he remained until 1972 when regrettably the Club closed. (Happily it reformed in 1984 and is still today an established strong Club). So in 1972 he joined Epsom Bowling Club, bringing his enthusiasm and skills to our Worple Road Club.
All new members are asked to contribute whatever time and help they can toward the maintenance of the Club green, grounds and property. Laurie was always a doer rather than a talker and promtly volunteered to join the already established working party, devoting his skills toward the green and its environs.
Very quickly he became assistant to Percy Rayner, the then Green Ranger, a job he did successfully for nine years until Percy died in 1981, when he took over the responsibility of Green Ranger - a post he held for 16 years until 1997 when he handed over the mantle to Stanley Day.
But Laurie retire!! No, No, he continued to put in the hours on Monday and Wednesday mornings and other days when sometime necessary, keeping busy on green edges, ditches, banks, hedges etc. There was always something to do. Occasionally some “special job” came along for the working party - Laurie would always be at the front rank of volunteers.
Perhaps I had better explain to non bowlers that the subtleties of a green (any green) are many and several. The behaviour of a green can change not only day to day, but hour to hour. The effect of temperature, moisture, cloud and sun can have a dramatic effect upon the travel, speed and movement of a bowl.
Laurie spent a career trying to understand these subtleties and wondering how he would interpret them and counter them, even looking for the panacea solution. He knew it was an impossible task, but he was always hopeful. Maybe when he takes his bowls out on to the ultimate “Higher Green”, he will find the answer.
Looking now at Laurie’s bowling prowess, he built an impressive and proud record.
1975 member of the team that won the Times Herald Trophy
member of the Yonwin Cup squad, winning in 1980, 1985, 1986 and 1987.
1980's represented the Club in the EBA (now Bowls England) Fours, East Surrey League Top 10 and London & Southern Counties Shield.
1987 and onwards Laurie played in the very first East Surrey League match against Old Coulsdon.
He then went on to play in a total of 123 games for Epsom in the League.
2004 member of the squad winning the Chrystie League.
In Club Competitions he had more than a hat full of triumphs.
He won:-
1983 Handicap Singles 1976 Two Wood Singles 1984 - 1987 the Pairs three times
1992 Triples 1995 Fours 1983 & 1986 Windeler Cup
He was a Finalist in:-
1976 Handicap Singles 1977& 1980 Championship Singles 1982 & 1983 Triples
1995 & 2005 Fours
That’s a pretty good record over any period. Laurie was Vice Captain in 2000.
At the Club Annual General Meeting in 2004 he was unanimously elected as a Club Vice President for his outstanding services to Epsom Bowling Club.
Off the green Laurie enjoyed a beer, but never to any excess, He was a joy to sit with and chat, putting the world to rights. He will be remembered not only for his contribution to the Club, but equally for his demeanour, his friendship, his helpfulness and his character.
Laurie will be sadly missed by the members of our Club, but also by the bowlers from local and County wide Clubs who have known him over the years. All of whom, I know, held him in very high regard.
Personally I regret the passing of a friend, fellow bowler and ace Club member, above all, one of life’s gentlemen.
Thank you Laurie and good bowling in the ultimate “Higher Green”.

The words written above were compiled by Bill Ellis and was read out by Bill at Laurie’s Memorial Service in the Methodist Church, Epsom on Friday 19th November 2010.

Dakota Sheared off five house tops

One of the most remarkable escape stories in aviation comes from Ruislip (Middlesex) on Thursday December 19th 1946.
This story involved Bobbie Pilbrow (Graham’s mum).

A Glasgow bound Dakota pancaked into a housetop after tearing the roofs off four houses. No one was seriously injured. The crash occurred in a blinding snow storm shortly after the plane took off from Northolt airport.
Rescue crews ran up ladders to cut a hole in the fuselage, and the 5 occupants of the ‘plane (including Bobbie Pilbrow) climbed through the house to walk downstairs to safety.

The following article appeared in the Daily Mail on 20th December 1946

By WILLIAM MATTINSON, Daily Mail Reporter

I MET Mr. Joe Levene yesterday as we were both about to alight from a No. 158 bus at Angus-drive, Ruislip, Middlesex, where a Railway Air Services Dakota had crashed on a pair of semi-detached houses. "Plane crash?" echoed Mr. Levene. He looked towards Angus-drive, and together we saw the nightmarish picture of a plane apparently frozen in mid-air, its nose and wings hidden by the housetops.
Suddenly Mr. Levene stopped and muttered to himself: "It's our house". The plane was at rest on the roof of  No. 46, and Mr. Levene ran inside. "It's our new home," he gulped when he came out.  "We're going to get married on Sunday." "My father-in-law phoned me at work and said he'd  been told there was a slight leak in the house. I suppose they wanted to break it to me gently.
"My fiancée, Miss Fay (Libby) Tregor, is out shopping, trying to get a few more blankets now they're off the  dockets. She'll be coming over here." Inside the new utility furniture was smothered in plaster. A new electric fire stood in the front garden. "We were going to Switzerland for our honeymoon  on Monday," said Mr. Levene. "I'd better call it off." When Miss Tregor returned she looked at the wreck and wept. Mrs. Florence Zigmond, of 44, Angus-drive, whose home was also damaged, was out in the road buying
fish when the plane hit the two semi-detached houses obliquely, swung violently round, and pushed the roof
off her house. One wing cut into the tiles 18in. above the small bedroom where David, her four-and-a- half-month-old baby, was sleeping. The windows of the room were not even cracked. Mrs. Zigmond screamed: "Save my baby," and the fish salesman dashed into the house and brought David to safety. The plane, a freighter, taxied across Northolt airfield in the snow at 11.50 a.m. with four crew and one passenger. It failed to rise, skimmed across the railway line, and brushed heavily through a tree-top. The nose dipped, but
Captain W. J. Johnson, the pilot, pulled it up. With 500 gallons of petrol aboard the machine careered across the
fields without gaining sufficient height to clear the houses in Angus-drive.
Onlookers were certain all in her must be killed. Yet all escaped from a crash at 150 miles an hour with slight injuries.

Club Finals

The Club Finals took place on Saturday 4th September 2010. The highlight of the day was the come back made by Stefan Tomm in the Ward Cup. Playing against Graham Pilbrow Stefan was 19 - 4 down, but won the game 21 - 19.
Congratulations goes especially to Janet Newman who won her very first trophy since joining the Club. She won the mixed pairs with Martin Harbottle and to Ruth Nixon who won her first trophy in the Ladies' Pairs with Maggie O'Sullivan. For the men John Huxford won his first major trophy, the Fours. (John has won the Windeler Cup)
Details of Day 1 (a lovely, warm, sunny day)
Four games took place in the morning.
The Ladies' Two Wood Plate was won by Maggie O'Sullivan who beat Anne Hoffmann 16 - 12 in a very close game. Maggie winning on the 20th end.
The Men's Triples Handicap turned out to be a comfortable win for Ken Rogers, Alan Wybrow & Martin Harbottle who beat Derek Jones, Ernie Phipps & David Sowdon 23 - 10
In the Ladies' Handicap Singles Gill Sperring had to get 28 shots to win against Tessa Hurworth. This turned out to be an excellent game with Tessa playing well. However, Gill went on to win 28 - 14.
The remaining game for the morning was the Men's Fours. This was also a comfortable win for John Huxford, David Ruston, Cyril Newman & John Warren who beat Derek Hoffmann, Len Philpott, Eric Brown & Pat Buckley 29 - 16. John won his very first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club in this game.
There were five games in the afternoon.
The Ladies' Handicap Pairs turned out to be an excellent game. Ruth Nixon & Maggie O'Sullivan beat Tessa Hurworth & Anne Hoffmann 21 - 16. However, the last few ends were very exciting as Tessa & Anne closed the gap to just 2 shots with three ends to go. This win gives Ruth her very first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.
The Ladies' Two Wood Final was between Gill Sperring & Eileen Mills. These two ladies have met on numerous occasions in competitions throughout the years and this year Gill won 16 - 6 after 17 ends.
The Mixed Pairs gave Janet Newman a first taste of playing in a Club Final. This turned out to be an excellent game with all four players playing very good bowls. With just a few ends to go the scores were level, but Janet & Martin Harbottle came through to win 23 - 19 against Sandra Huxford & John Hart. This win gives Janet her very first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.
The Mixed Singles (Ward Cup) turned out to be quite a remarkable game of bowls. Graham Pilbrow got into his stride straight away drawing consistently to the jack and raced into a 19 - 3 lead. Stefan Tomm then scored 1 shot and immediately gave the jack to Graham. (this rule will not apply from 2011). Suddenly Stefan started to draw in bowl after bowl and Graham began to drop many bowls short. Stefan continued to give the jack to Graham and he crept closer to Graham's 19 eventually drawing level 19 - 19. On the 21st end Graham was holding shot and Stefan drew in with the result being so close the Umpire was called on to measure. The Umpire could not separate the bowls resulting in a tied end. Stefan won the game scoring two singles on the final ends. Amazing come back.
The Men's Two Wood Singles was won by David Sowdon who beat Pat Buckley after 19 ends.
Congratulations to all players for an excellent day of bowling.

Club Finals - Sunday (rainy to start, cloudy but became sunny & warm)
Once again another excellent day of bowling. In the morning there were two games.
The Ladies' Triples was a very close game between Sue Needham, Lyz Warren & Eileen Mills against Ruth Nixon, Dolly Snow & Jan Allum. Eileen's team was behind right up until the 16th end when they took the lead 14 - 13. They held on to win 16 - 13. Sue won her very first Trophy in this game.
The other game saw Tessa Hurworth winning her first Club trophy. She beat Trish Tewfik 22 - 13 in the Ladies' Junior Singles.
In the afternoon 5 games took place. Traditionally the second day always sees the Ladies' and Men's Championship Finals. This year for the first time in many years it was definite that there would be new names on the Cups.
Ladies' Final was a one sided affair when Maggie O'Sullivan dominated the game right from the start against Jan Allum. She raced into a 16 - 0 lead, but then Jan scored 3 shots to get going. However, Maggie finished strongly and won 21 - 5 in just 12 ends to become Ladies' Champion for the first time.
The Men's Final was a much closer contest between Brian Kenyon and David Sowdon. After 10 ends Brian was ahead 8 - 4 but the scores were level 9 - 9 after 15 ends. Brian then had a couple of good ends and went ahead 19 - 12, but David came back strongly with a 3 on the 25th end followed by a 2 on the next end to make it 19 - 17 to Brian. Brian then scored 2 singles to become Men's Champion for the very first time.
The Men's Pairs Final was between Len Philpott & Geoff Purrott against Bill Lawrence & Martin Harbottle. Martin was hoping to make it three wins out of three this weekend, but Len & Geoff came through to win 21 - 16. The game was really decided in the second half when Len & Geoff scored 13 shots to Bill & Martin's 5 shots.
The Men's Lower Handicap Singles game was contested by two of Epsom's newer members, Bob Lister & Derek Martin. This turned out to be an excellent game. Bob led 17 - 7 after 13 ends, but Derek fought back well to close the gap 20 - 15 after 20 ends. However, Bob finished well winning 24 - 19 to win his first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.
The final game was the 100 Up Cup. This was the second year of this Competition and once again we had an extremely good contest between Stefan Tomm & John Hart. There was never many shots between the two, but Stefan finished strongly to win 100 - 90.
Presentations of cups were made at the end of each session.
Many thanks to everyone who made the weekend so successful. Special thanks go to Competitions Secretaries George Sperring and Betty Day for all their hard wok and to everyone who helped with the food and bar.

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup

The Sutton & District Bowling Association Finals were played on Saturday 25th September 2010.  Epsom reached the Final for the 9th time in their history.  The first recorded entry for Epsom Bowling Club in the Yonwin Cup was in 1976, and they have played every year since.  Epsom has won the Yonwin Cup on SEVEN occasions (1980, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1995 & 2003) and lost in one final in 1982 to Chipstead.

This year, however, Epsom was soundly beaten by a very strong Cheam team.

Details:

Rink 4  Martin Harbottle Ron Mew  Pat Buckley  Les Owen  drew 17 - 17

This turned out to be a very close game.  Epsom was behind 6 - 9 after 10 ends and 11 - 14 adrift after 15 ends.  Epsom then had three good ends to take the lead 16 - 14 and went into the last end leading by 2 shots.  Cheam managed to tie the rink 17 - 17.

Rink 5  John Hart  Terry Hoye  George Sperring  Graham Naish  lost 20 - 22

After 10 ends Epsom was 10 - 11 down and pulled level 15 - 15 after 15 ends.  They too held a two shot advantage going into the last end, but Cheam scored a 4 to win by 2 shots.

Rink 6  Brian Kenyon  David Sowdon Jim Scott  Peter Miller  lost 7 - 38

Epsom played a very strong rink from Cheam who dominated the game all afternoon and were soundly beaten.

Final Score:  Epsom 44  Cheam 77

Men - East Surrey League

Epsom played Chipstead on Saturday 18th September and won on three rinks and lost on the fourth. They won 85 - 75 and 5points to 1 point.  Unfortunately Epsom fail to win the League by just ½ point.     Congratulations to the winners - Purley Bury.

This result of this game had several possibilities.  If Chipstead had won they would have become second in the League. (they could not have won the League).

Epsom had several possibilities - a win 5½ - ½ or 6 - 0 would have given them the title and any other win or draw meant second place.   Epsom came very close to securing the title at a very late stage in the match when three rinks were winning and the fourth came within just 2 shots for the draw required.  However, it was not to be and Epsom came second by just the ½ point.  A great effort by all the Epsom players who played in the League.

Several records were broken during this season:-

Winning most games in a season - 13 out of 15.  Most games winning scoring over 100 shots - 7.  An 8 win sequence of victories.  Scoring more points than ever before - 68½ and having the highest shot difference than any other team in the League - 437.   (further details on these facts will be published in another article).

Details:

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon  John Huxford  Ron Mew  Les Owen  won 26 - 18*

After 10 ends Epsom held a 3 shot lead, 10 - 7, but then scored 10 shots over 4 ends to take a 20 - 7 lead.  Chipstead came back into the game well in the second half, but Epsom scored a 5 on the 19th end going on to win by 8 shots.

Rink 3  Ron Snow  John Hart  Terry Hoye  Graham Naish  won 23 - 16

This was a tale of two halves.  After 13 ends Epsom was 5 - 11 down, but then scored 16 shots over 6 ends to take a 21 - 13 lead.  Chipstead failed to recover from this and the rink won by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Geoff Purrott  Len Philpott  Pat Buckley  Jim Scott   won 22 - 16

This rink went into a 10 - 0 lead after just 5 ends.  Chipstead came back into the game, but after 15 ends Epsom still had a 8 shot advantage, 18 - 10.  They won by 6 shots.

Rink 5  Bill Lawrence Roy Doughty  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller  lost 14 - 25

This turned out to be a struggle all afternoon.  After 10 ends they were down 5 - 11 and were still behind after 15 ends, 9 - 15.   They then gave themselves a chance of securing a draw or win by coming within 2 shots of Chipstead on the 19th end.  Striving for the win, the rink dropped 9 shots over the last two ends to lose by 11 shots.

Final Scores:  Epsom 85  Chipstead 75     Epsom 5 points  Chipstead 1 point.
